Introduction to Sem

...EM stands for scanning electron microscope. The SEM is a microscope that uses electrons instead of light to form an image. Since their development in the early 1950's, scanning electron microscopes have developed new areas of study in the medical and physical science communities. The SEM has allowed researchers to examine a much bigger variety of specimens. The scanning electron microscope has many advantages over traditional microscopes. The SEM has a large depth of field, which allows more of a specimen to be in focus at one time. The SEM also has much higher resolution, so closely spaced specimens can be magnified at much higher levels. Because the SEM uses electromagnets rather than lenses, the researcher has much more control in the degree of magnification. All of these advantages, as well as the actual strikingly clear images, make the scanning electron microscope one of the most useful instruments in research today The SEM is an instrument that produces a largely magnified image by using electrons instead of light to form an image. A beam of electrons is produced at the top of the microscope by an electron gun. The electron beam follows a vertical path through the microscope, which is held within a vacuum. The beam travels through electromagnetic fields and lenses, which focus the beam down toward the sample. Once the beam hits the sample, electrons and X-rays are ejected from the sample. Detectors collect these X-rays, backscattered electrons, and secondary......

...Reflective Journal Psychology seems a very profound subject but I am studying it. Through the lectures I had attended, I have more ideas about psychology. In my mind, there are many theories used to describe human’s behaviors, thoughts and emotions. In fact, we may find that people even ourselves have different personalities over time. What make our personality change? In this essay, I will put forward to the idea of Albert Bandura’s reciprocal determinism and the factors that influence our personality There are many influences affecting our personality and behavior such as the social environment, people’s education level, cognitive skills and attitudes. At the same time, people’s behaviors can also change the environment. The aspects of individual and the aspects of situation are interacted. These are what Albert Bandura’s reciprocal determinism advocate. Nowadays, it is not uncommon to see that citizens parade the streets. They fight for their own needs and the community needs. They are changing our living environment and the social culture. Why are people being more and more active in pursuing their needs? Thanks to 12-year free education, more and more citizens can enjoy the benefits of education. Citizens broaden their horizons and have the ability to understand more difficult social issues like social justice. They started to distinguish between right and wrong on community and concern about the development of the community. Also, economic factors...

Murabaha in Mauritius

...‘Explain within which context how can we adopt the contract of Murabaha in Mauritius “  Islamic Banking in Mauritius In 2007, the Banking Act in Mauritius was amended to cater for Islamic banking activities. The Bank of Mauritius issued the first Islamic banking license in October 2009 to cater for the approximately 18 per cent of the 1.2 million Mauritian population that is Muslim. According to the Governor of the Central Bank it would have been a big task to build a sustainable Islamic retail banking model that is profitable to service just over 200,000 Muslims in the Indian Ocean Island if it were not for the Bank of Mauritius’s plans to introduce short term liquidity instruments. Governor of the Central Bank said that it is a major step in translating the vision of the Authorities to provide an alternative mode of financial intermediation, thus enhancing the options available to bank customers.  Use of Murabaha contracts in Mauritius With the sub-prime crisis challenging conventional banking and financial products, there is mounting interest in Islamic products which comply with the principles of shariah law. According to report, the size of the global market for shariah compliant products is estimated at $800 billion. The increase in wealth in Islamic countries (especially in the Middle East with its accumulation of petrodollars), the growth in the Muslim population, the huge capital requirements for infrastructure projects across the Muslim world as well......

Romancing Mauritius

...as early as the 10th century) by the Portuguese, Mauritius was uninhabited until 1598 when first the Dutch, then French and finally the British colonised the tiny island before it became independent in 1968. Even though the British rule lasted a relatively longer period, the French roots are more evident in the Mauritian lifestyle and people still prefer to speak Creole and French over the official English language. Right from the time when you set foot at the SSR International Airport at Plaisance, chances are that if you say you are from India, the locals, who proudly refer to the island as 'Little India'-a moniker attributed to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, will give you a warmer welcome. Not surprising since over 68 per cent of Mauritians are of Indian origin whose forefathers migrated to Mauritius as indentured labourers during the British rule. Though India is seventh among top 10 nations in the Mauritius tourism pie, it contributes only a fraction to the market dominated by Europe till now. However, the Mauritian Tourism minister Nando Bodha plans to change that. He recently announced plans to attract over 100,000 Indian tourists within the next five years, more than doubling the number from the existing 49,779 (as per February 25, 2011 data). Says the minister, "Being initially frequented by honeymooners only, today we have different segment of travellers from India visiting the island." "Both Mauritius and India have a long standing historical and......

Sem Tem

...Research proposal 1: Semiconductor Devices Introduction Scanning electron microscope (SEM) is a kind of electron microscope that produces images by scanning it with the focused electron beam. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a type of microscopy that a beam of electrons can transmit through an very-thin specimen, interacting with the sample when it passes through. Both instruments’ images have the high resolution than the optical images. However, the focus of analysis is different. Only surface region of specimen can be viewed in SEM. On the other hand, TEM seeks to see the structure of the specimen and arrangement of crystals. Choice of instrument In this case, we aim to confirm the crystallographic orientation and the thickness of semiconductor devices which is focus on the sample’s structure. Nevertheless, SEM just focuses on the sample’s surface. Therefore, TEM is the suitable instrument. Choice of techniques & reasoning and justification The technique of phase contrast ,which is formed with at least two diffracted electron beams through their interference could be used in this experiment due to it is able to deal with the interfacial structure, crystal growth and others. Firstly, assumed the sample (semiconductor devices) is uniform. As the specimen is too thick (AlGaAs is around 5nm, the thicker layer of GaAs is roughly 5µm) to deal with the technique of phase contrast, it need to be cut to a much thinner thickness which is approximately less than 20nm...

Operations Management in a Pineapple Sector in Mauritius

...conditions of Les Mariannes/Congomah region would be most appropriate for the establishment of a pineapple zone. Moreover, the topography of the land and its proximity with La Nicoliere Reservoir makes it highly suitable for integration in the agri-tourism concept. The latter will attract visits from tourists so as to encourage on site consumption and sale of pineapple gift boxes (fresh & processed pineapple). LITERATURE REVIEW Productivity measures the increase in outputs, not accounted for by the growth in production inputs. As it contributes to a healthy and thriving economy, it is a closely watched economic performance indicator. From increased inputs and/or increased productivity agricultural output can grow. The pineapple sector in Mauritius has continuously been facing new challenges. With persistent increase in prices of land rent, fertilizers, labour cost, electricity and water bills, fuel and so on throughout the recent years, competing in low production cost of pineapples has become very difficult compared to other pineapple countries like Philippines, Brazil, Costa Rica, China, Ghana and so on. According to the resource based theory, the principle deerminants of a firm’s export performance and strategy are the internal organization resources (Dhanaraj, 2003;Barney& Collis, 1991). This is in contrast to the industrial organization theory which argues that the external factors determine the firm’s strategy, which in turn determines economic performance......
