Big Skinny Case Analysis

...2013 CONTENTS EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 2 PROBLEM STATEMENT 3 DATA ANALYSIS 3 KEY DECISION CRITERIA 4 ALTERNATIVE ANALYSIS 4 RECOMMENDATIONS 7 ACTION AND IMPLEMENTATION PLAN 9 Executive Summary In 2010, Big Skinny CEO Kiril Alexandrov was looking to transcend from retail distribution and print advertising to the world of online marketing to achieve maximum growth. The retail sales pitch was an easy one, as Alexandrov focused on the value of the wallet and the impulsiveness of consumers (Benjamin & Kominers, 2012). Unfortunately, translating this type of sales pitch was much harder to do in the world of cyberspace. Big Skinny centered their online marketing efforts around display Ads, keyword searches, social media and relationships with online distributors and deep discounted sites such as Amazon and Groupon respectively. The expansion caused much hardship, as Big Skinny received negative feedback on the review website Yelp that stemmed from their Groupon experiment. They also faced a glitch in their online promotion that allowed 4,000 people to order free wallets from their online store. Big Skinny needs to refocus their online marketing strategy by getting rid of display Ads, refining keyword searches and severing ties with deep discounted sites. Big Skinny can create value for their product and manage their orders better by being more selective with who distributes their product and by......

...Social Media The National Labor Relations Board continues to be laser-focused on the issue of employers disciplining employees for comments made in social media. It filed numerous complaints against employers in the past year. Although the decisions are very fact-specific, they share key points for employers to remember. The recent decision against non-union retailer Bettie Page is instructive. In Design Technology Group, LLC et al., Case 20-CA-35511 (Apr. 27, 2012), the Administrative Law Judge found that Bettie Page engaged in unfair labor practices when it discharged three employees who engaged in protected concerted activity through discussions on Facebook. The decision ordered Bettie Page to reinstate the employees to their former jobs and pay back wages. Facts of the Case: Bettie Page opened a store in the Haight Ashbury district of San Francisco in July 2011. Shortly after opening, several employees felt that the store manager was not managing the store or its personnel very well. Among other things, the employees were concerned that the store was closing later than other stores in the neighborhood and that closing employees were harassed by local street people. The employees brought this concern to the store manager, the owner, and the company’s human resources consultant. When the store manager was out of town, two employees closed the store an hour early with permission from the store owner. When the store manager heard of the early closing, she angrily......

Social Interationist Media Analysis

...Symbolic Interactionist Perspective Media Analysis SOC/100 Introduction to Sociology 06/07/2012 Mrs. Christina Oberste Symbolic Interactionist Perspective Media Analysis In today’s society, all human beings have their very own distinctive, customizable features such as body composition, hair length, attire, and style. At the same token, they all have genetic-based features such as color, height, facial features, and gender. While these features are quite commonly used to identify all human beings, they also give way to categorizing, mislabeling, and stereotyping another individual. Categorizing society by means of race, social class, and gender, is very common in today’s society; almost too common as it may seem. In this paper, the Academy Award-winning picture “Crash,” will be used to display some of the social injustices in today’s society. Crash, Oscar-winner for best picture, best original screenplay, and best editing at the 2005 Academy Awards, was co-written, produced, and directed by Paul Higgins in 2004. Crash was inspired by a real-life event in which Higgins’ Porsche was hi-jacked outside a video store in Los Angeles California. Crash touches up on a lot of different topics such as stereotyping, racism, classism, sexism, and exposure to different forms of racial discrimination such as racial stereotyping and racial profiling all from the non-verbal, symbolic perspective of an outsider. The first scene of the movie takes the viewers on-scene of a motor......
