The history of Egypt has been long and rich, due to the flow of the Nile river, with its fertile banks and delta. Its rich history also comes from its native inhabitants and outside influence. Much of Egypt's ancient history was a mystery until the secrets of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs were deciphered with the discovery and help of the Rosetta Stone. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing. The Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the other Seven Wonders, is gone. The Library of Alexandria was the only one of its kind for centuries.

On Bullshit

...One of the most salient features of our culture is that there is so much bullshit. Everyone knows this. Each of us contributes his share. But we tend to take the situation for granted. Most people are rather confident of their ability to recognize bullshit and to avoid being taken in by it. So the phenomenon has not aroused much deliberate concern, or attracted much sustained inquiry. In consequence, we have no clear understanding of what bullshit is, why there is so much of it, or what functions it serves. And we lack a conscientiously developed appreciation of what it means to us. In other words, we have no theory. I propose to begin the development of a theoretical understanding of bullshit, mainly by providing some tentative and exploratory philosophical analysis. I shall not consider the rhetorical uses and misuses of bullshit. My aim is simply to give a rough account of what bullshit is and how it differs from what it is not, or (putting it somewhat differently) to articulate, more or less sketchily, the structure of its concept. Any suggestion about what conditions are logically both necessary and sufficient for the constitution of bullshit is bound to be somewhat arbitrary. For one thing, the expression bullshit is often employed quite loosely -- simply as a generic term of abuse, with no very specific literal meaning. For another, the phenomenon itself is so vast and amorphous that no crisp and perspicuous analysis of......

...As a former Soviet citizen and Soviet Jew, I experienced a huge discrimination in the USSR. All Soviet citizens had passports with a record of nationality in them. Some people had Russian nationality, some Ukranian nationality, and some, like me, had a Jewish record on the first page. We needed to show a passport when applying for jobs, getting housing, or entering University. And when you had a Jewish record it was like being a registered sex offender in the US today. Jews were pariahs in the USSR. You should not tell anybody you were a Jew. Some Russian people would beat you. Silently, the Soviet government supported this. When I was a child, some neighbors knew we were Jews, so they sent their kids to fight with me. I was beaten many times, just because of the Jewish Scarlett Letter. The Soviet Police were responsible for maintaining the passport system, and putting the Scarlett Jewish ID there. This looks just like the situation for sex offenders in many states today. When their neighbors learn a sex offender family has moved next door, the sex offenders and their families are hassled, possibly their houses attacked, and some sex offenders have even been killed. After graduating from high school I was going to Leningrad University. A University worker asked for my passport. He made a note about nationality, and told me there are too many Jews here. As a result I got an F on my first test, and could not enter University. I was an A+ student in high school. When I......

...Southern rock is a category of the genre of rock music. It developed in the United States and varies from rock and roll, country, and blues and it is focused generally on electric or acoustic guitar and vocals. Southern rock plays a huge part in the influence of modern rock music. Important figures of southern rock include The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Widespread Panic, Creedence Clearwater, and many more that have influenced the southern rock culture greatly and some bands which are still paving the way for the future of southern rock music. Southern rocks origins lie mainly in the American South. In the 1950's many Southern Rock stars came about such as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis but however in the 1960's British invasion and the rise of folk, and psychadelic rock shifted the focus away from Southern Rock and the rural south and to large cities like Liverpool, London, New York, and San Francisco. Although this shift changed interests in rock in the late 1960's bands revived roots of southern rock such as Creedence Clearwater Revival, and The band. Creedence Clearwater Revival was among the best southern rock group in the 1960's. Also known as Creedence or CCR consisted of a lead guitarist, lead vocalist, and songwriter. Also rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty, bassist Stu Cook, and drummer Doug Clifford. Their musical style infused roots rock and swamp rock genres but overall portrayed a southern rock style singing about popular......

...set forth that ownership dispersion implies management is distinguished from ownership, which, as Jensen and Meckling (1976) emphasize, may contribute to agency problems between managers and shareholders or shareholders and debtors. On the other hand, Shleifer and Vishny (1986) and Morck, Shleifer and Vishny (1988) detect the phenomenon of ownership concentration. La Porta et al. (1999) and Claessens et al. (2000) usher in the conception of ultimate controller; they define firm ownership as voting rights, unearthing that many controlling shareholders of listed firms predominate firms by means of pyramid structure and cross holding, which could result in central agency problem. Zelenyuk and Zheka (2006) investigate the association between some individual governance elements and index of corporate governance quality (constructed from corporate governance indicators) and firms’ efficiency, applying various methods with Data Envelopment Analysis, for a set of listed companies in Ukraine and find a positive correlation. However the main critique of these studies is also that they do not control for potential endogeneity problems. Durnev and Kim (2003) and Black et al (2004) have attempted an instrumental variable analysis to address possible endogeneity problem. Durnev and Kim (2003) investigate the determinants of corporate governance in emerging markets and briefly address whether corporate governance quality predicts market value. They find that higher scores on corporate......

...Dov Charney is the CEO and founder of American Apparel. He is responsible for opening the company’s first retail store in 2003. There are about 280 stores in about 20 countries. Charney owns 57% of the company and is responsible for the double-digit loss American Apparel experienced this year (Wall Street Journal). Dov Charney has loss representation from Deloitte & Touche LLC. from flawed financial statements and lost 1,500 factory workers who were illegal immigrants (The Gazette). Dov Charney has designed an organizational culture that may not be appealing to its shareholders. He argues that American Apparel is a “freewheeling creative environment; it’s not inappropriate to use foul language” (Dateline). This may be described to some as a ‘hostile work environment.’ Although the law in California states that it is permissible to use inappropriate language in a creative work environment, American Apparel employees have reported to be offended. Charney says he uses the “language of the street” at work and “it can get pretty salty” (BusinessWeek). Other company policies include drinks on the job for those who are working late and promoting a “highly sexual atmosphere”. He promotes dating within the organization and actively participates in relationships with his subordinates. He claims they have been consensual. Employees have noticed bonuses and incentives for those who have been in a relationship with him (Dateline). These actions can cause employees to feel as......

...page triggers a page fault. Keep in mind that when this bit is zero, the kernel can do whatever it pleases with the remaining fields. The R/W flag stands for read/write; if clear, the page is read-only. Flag U/S stands for user/supervisor; if clear, then the page can only be accessed by the kernel. These flags are used to implement the read-only memory and protected kernel space we saw before. Bits D and A are for dirty and accessed. A dirty page has had a write, while an accessed page has had a write or read. Both flags are sticky: the processor only sets them, they must be cleared by the kernel. Finally, the PTE stores the starting physical address that corresponds to this page, aligned to 4KB. This naive-looking field is the source of some pain, for it limits addressable physical memory to 4 GB. The other PTE fields are for another day, as is Physical Address Extension. A virtual page is the unit of memory protection because all of its bytes share the U/S and R/W flags. However, the same physical memory could be mapped by different pages, possibly with different protection flags. Notice that execute permissions are nowhere to be seen in the PTE. This is why classic x86 paging allows code on the stack to be executed, making it easier to exploit stack buffer overflows (it’s still possible to exploit non-executable stacks using return-to-libc and other techniques). This lack of a PTE no-execute flag illustrates a broader fact: permission flags in a VMA may or may not......

On Bullshit

...where to start with this paper because it was such a short piece. However bullshit is used in everyday business practice and I felt the need to touch on it. I will be writing about Harry G. Frankfurt’s piece “On Bullshit.” Which after reading the piece I was not satisfied and did a little more research about it to give me a little more insight. The piece in the book compares lying and bluffing to bullshitting. He explains that lying is a falsehood and so is bluffing. The liar and bluffer are intentionally getting the facts wrong. Bullshit on the other hand is basically a counterfeit. Frankfurt uses an older Mr. Simpson from Eric Ambler’s novel “Dirty Story” and he said to his young son “Never tell a lie when you can bullshit your way through.” Frankfurt really never comes out and talks about his position on bullshit which is why I had to go and dig a little further. I found that he thinks that bullshit is worse than lying. I think ethically that he feels whether in business or in normal day life it should not be used. We are more tolerant of bullshit than lying which he leaves for us to figure out. Frankfurt explains, for a liar “Telling a lie is an act with a sharp focus” and for a bullshiter “His focus is panoramic rather than particular” (54). I do not completely agree with Frankfurt’s position on bullshit. I do not think that bullshit is worse than lying. With bullshit there is still truth. Bullshit I feel you can still see the truth it just takes the longer road to......

...International Accounting Session 9 – Cost Allocations and Activity-Based Costing Dr. Othman Cole othman.cole@faculty.hult.edu 1 Absorption Costing In absorption costing, all manufacturing costs, both fixed and variable, are assigned to units of product. Units are said to fully absorb manufacturing costs. Most countries require some form of absorption costing for both external financial reports and for tax reports. Also, most companies across the world use absorption costing in their management reports. It is the most common approach to product costing throughout the world. It is also known as Job-Order Costing. 2 Absorption Costing – Components •  Direct Materials – can be easily traced to a particular unit •  Direct Labour – can be easily traced to a particular unit •  Manufacturing Overhead – CANNOT be easily traced to a particular unit As we recall, the total of the above 3 components is known as Product Cost, also known as Cost of Goods Sold (COGS). 3 Absorption Costing – Manufacturing Overhead 1.  Select an appropriate allocation base – the most widely used allocation bases in manufacturing are direct labour-hours, direct labour cost, machine hours, and units of product (when there is only a single product). 2.  Calculate a predetermined overhead rate – this is given as: Predetermined overhead rate = Estimated total manufacturing overhead cost / Estimated total amount of the allocation base 3.  Apply overhead cost using predetermined......

...my knees on the floor, I had already fallen asleep. Just a note of advice, when you get an idea about something that is church related in a good way, you should probably listen to it,…….but of course I was too lazy and forgot. Waking up the next morning was a little bit better even though I still hit my head on my way to turn off my alarm. I went through the routine of my morning and made it to the seminary with a similar feeling to the previous day. When each of the other council members took their seats, I felt something different. It was a pain of guilt that I had when we were asked if we had prayed for help to find the scripture the night before. Having not done so, I felt pretty bad, but was able to cover up my guilty face by eating some pretzels and smiling when someone told a funny joke. We were then instructed to go out into separate rooms by ourselves to search the Doctrine and Covenants for anything that could be our theme. I didn’t know what to expect, but I went out into a room and closed the door, I began to think of what on earth I should do. I remembered my previous guilt from not praying and decided to pray before I read. I read over the book for about twenty minutes and had a few scriptures that sounded alright, but none that really stuck out to me. After the council had returned to the room and discussed what we had found, there were over fifty different scriptures written on the board. I had no idea of how we were going to narrow that list down to one......

...device that supplies electric energy to an electrical load. The primary function of a power supply is to convert one form of electrical energy to another and, as a result, power supplies are sometimes referred to as electric power converters. Some power supplies are discrete, stand-alone devices, whereas others are built into larger devices along with their loads. Examples of the latter include power supplies found in desktop computers and consumer electronics devices. A CD-ROM /ˌsiːˌdiːˈrɒm/ is a pre-pressed optical compact disc which contains data. The name is an acronym which stands for "Compact Disc Read-Only Memory". Computers can read CD-ROMs, but cannot write on the CD-ROM's which are not writable or erasable. A network switch (sometimes known as a switching hub) is a computer networking device that is used to connect devices together on a computer network by performing a form of packet switching. A network switch is considered more advanced than a hub because a switch will only send a message to the device that needs or requests it, rather than broadcasting the same message out of each of its ports. A network switch is a multi-port network bridge that processes and forwards data at the data link layer(layer 2) of the OSI model. Some network switches have additional features, including the ability to route packets; these switches are commonly known as layer-3 or multilayer switches. Switches exist for various types of networks including Fibre......
