INTRODUCTION

A core competency by definition is a unique ability that a company acquires from its founders or develops that can make a significant contribution to perceived customer benefits of a product or services and it is difficult for a competitor to imitated. Core competencies are what give a company one or more competitive advantages, in creating and delivering value to its customers in its chosen field (Anonymous). According to Fred (2013), core competencies define as a value chain activity that firm performs especially well. When a core competence evolves into a major competitive advantage, it will turn into distinctive competence. Core competencies may include any combination of skills, technologies, processes, knowledge or expertise and are often achieved as a result of long-term development processes and/or experiences (Mayhew, 2010). Competitive advantage on the other hand is defined as a measure relative to rivals in a given industry. Competitive advantage happen when a firm can do something that rival firm cannot do, or owns something that rival firm desire (Fred, 2013). For example, Nestlé core competency is food and beverages that is full with nutrition, health and wellness. By defining own core competencies and SWOT (strength, weaknesses, opportunity and treats) the company will be able to focus on its organisation uniqueness. In this study, I will focus on the core competency for Company SapuraKencana Petroleum Berhad. This study is organised as follows; section 2.0 will be informing the background of SapuraKencana Petroleum Berhad. ...energy corporations in the world, and one of the six leaders. In order to project social responsibility and improve its image British Petroleum changed its name into BP in year 2000 with a logo of green and yellow sunflower patterns. Paradoxically the same company symbol is now under derision and the object of controversial attacks from environmentalists and damaging court cases. The company’s predicament further worsened when it was listed as one of the “ten worst corporations” during the year 2001 and 2006. In fact, BP and its competitors Royal Dutch-Shell were considered by activists to be responsible with the threatening phenomenon of climate change. BP was warned before the oil pipeline leak happened in Alaska, but no action was made by the higher officials to mitigate its possible occurrence and reduce damages. In March 2005, BP's Texas City, Texas refinery, one of its largest refineries, exploded causing 15 deaths, injuring 180 people and forcing thousands of nearby residents to remain sheltered in their homes. A large column filled with hydrocarbon overflowed to form a vapor cloud, which ignited. The explosion caused all the casualties and substantial damage to the rest of the plant. The incident came as the culmination of a series of less serious accidents at the refinery, and the engineering problems were not addressed by the management. Maintenance and safety at the plant had been cut as a cost-saving measure, the responsibility ultimately resting with......

...strategy' and 'A Strategic Plan' Strategic Plan; is a systemic process of envisioning a desired future, and translating this vision into broadly defined goals or objectives and a sequence of steps to achieve them. It involves a systematic, formally documented process for deciding the handful of key decisions that an organisation, viewed as a corporate, whole must get right in order to thrive over the next few years. The process results in the production of a corporate strategic plan. Strategy; relates to the firm or company identifying its economic, social, and environmental performance objectives and it helps bridge the gap between the long-term vision and short-term decisions. It provides a basis for the company to build or gain a competitive advantage and increase its bottom line or market share over the long-term. As a strategy involves looking forward there is always uncertainty and risk associated with deciding strategy. The question ‘what is strategy?’ therefore also implies a set of strategic options from which one chooses a course of action to achieve advantage. Strategy is more about a set of options or "strategic choices" than a fixed plan or road map. As I have researched this paper it became apparent that strategy has many facets and means many different things to many different people. Henry Mintzberg addressing the question “what is strategy” argues the word strategy has has a multiplicity of meanings, and in his writing on strategic management theory, Henry......
