The Help

...The American Dream, something that every American has a chance at, the ideals of freedom, equality, and opportunity held to be available to everyone living in the U.S... But this was not the case in the 1960’s for African Americans. This chance was taken away from them because of racial prejudice. Slavery still did exist in a sense. Blacks had been discriminated against for generations and separated from whites by law. Segregation had oppressed blacks for so many years. Kathryn Stockett, the author of The Help, shows how racism and discrimination destroyed the chance for African Americans to achieve the American Dream. In her book, The Help, Kathryn Stockett writes a realistic fiction story about the life and roles of black maids in the 1960’s in Jackson Mississippi. Skeeter Phelan, Minny Jackson and Aiblieen narrate the story. Skeeter is a 23-year-old educated white woman who is coming home from college. She lives at home on her family's cotton plantation. She is different from most women in her town mainly because of the maid that raised her, Constantine. “All my life I'd been told what to believe about politics, coloreds, being a girl. But with Constantine's thumb pressed in my hand, I realized I actually had a choice in what I could believe.” She slowly realizes she does not to be a part of the racism her town holds. She loves to write, so she soon devotes herself, at a high risk, to write a book featuring the real stories of the black women who work for the white......

The Effects of Pollution and How Students Can Help to Reduce Pollution ?

...The effects of pollution and how students can help to reduce pollution ? |   | Pollution means contamination and there are many different types of pollution such as environmental pollution and noise pollution. Environmental pollution is the biggest challenge facing humanity as pollution of the air and sea directly affects our lives. The human existence can come under threat if pollution level increases to hazardous level. In fact, some country frequently faces the haze-related pollution yearly due to wild fires in their neighboring country aggravated by the practice of open burning in our country. Factories too are culprits as they emit pollutants and hazardous waste substances either into the air or into the sea. The increasing number of vehicles which emit the dangerous carbon monoxide and green house gases add to the danger we face from pollution. The earth's atmosphere is constantly being exposed to hazardous materials due to rapid development and human activity to advance their lives. The industrial west like America and Europe is the biggest culprit as they are the world's biggest polluters.Students can play a ole in helping to reduce pollution and create a healthy atmosphere for us to engage in activities without fear for our health. Cheating Helps Students to Learn

... CHEATING HELPS STUDENTS TO LEARN Every action has a consequence, whether it is good or bad. The choices you make can follow you the rest of your life. Cheating refers to an immoral way of achieving a goal. Cheating is an issue that affects many students at one time or another throughout their education. There are many different ways to cheat: copying homework, looking over at a peers test, plagiarizing, and so on. Cheating behaviors are becoming increasingly pervasive and frequent in academic context (McCabe & Trevino, 1997; McCabe, Trevino & Butterfield, 2001), with grave repercussions on the main mission of any educational institution: to promote the acquisition of actual knowledge and competences in students (Whitley & Keith-Spiegel, 2001). Longitudinal research in school environments reported an increase in cheating over the last decades, and a decrease in individuals’ perceived severity of dishonest behavior (Murdock, Hale & Weber, 2001). Today’s high school and college students openly admit that academic cheating has become both pervasive and expected. As many as 80% to 90% of students cheat prior to graduating from high school, and a similar percentage cheat during their undergraduate years (Davis, Grover, Becker, & McGregor, 1992; McCabe & Trevino, 1997). Many students admit to cheating only once; however, for a substantial minority, the behavior is repetitive (Hollinger & Lanza-Kaduce, 1996; McCabe & Trevino, 1997). Moreover, cheating rates......

Asking for Help

...Asking For Help: A Self Reflection Assignment: from Personal to Professional Responses Professor Robyn Brown-Manning SW 717 Social Work Practice and Learning Lab Assignment 1 We live in a world or society where there are certain fundamental needs, which are important in facilitating our development. “These needs can be considered in two overall categories: the need for security, and the need to accommodate the drive toward growth,” (Brill, 2005, pg. 27) all of which can be fulfilled by education. As a citizen of the United States, in an egalitarian society where educational advancement is fostered, I was able to become closer towards achieving the American dream. Education was also seen by my immigrant family as an important factor in attaining greater opportunities and ultimately an improved lifestyle. The process of accomplishing the American dream is one which is not always easy and comes with many challenges. One important challenge was getting the resources I needed to further my academic goals, which was hampered by my parents’ inability to understand the educational system in the United States, and my parents’ limited financial assets. As a result, I knew I would have to depend on outside assistance. This proved to be a difficult task for me, because as a male I felt there was a negative stigma associated with asking for help from an outside source as this may display vulnerability. Nevertheless, with dedication and support from those...

Currently the 5 year dividend growth of the company are 21.26% can be considered a fair value if compared to the other company we invested in such as Kalbe Farma which has a dividend growth rate of 50% and Telekomunikasi Indonesia with dividend growth of only 7.28%, but considering that BRI momentum are rising there is a high probability that the dividend growth rate will increase in the future. Looking at the stock chart of a 3 month basis it is shown that the stock are currently rising although its not as high as it was in April but it is slowly and steadily rising. Meanwhile the RSI and the ROC of BRI are relatively constant currently the RSI in 56.299 and ROC at 1.51515 which indicates that it has a potential upward momentum. As seen in the chart that the RSI of BRI are relatively constant we can concluded that BRI can maintain their market share value for the past 3 month Unilever Indonesia Tbk PT Currently Unilever Indonesia are having a downward momentum looking at a 1 month time, but the fluctuation shown in the chart prove that the stock are a bit unstable where it can rise and fall rapidly. High School Students Are Less Likely [Than Adults] to Seek Help for Their Mental Illnesses Due to Societal Stigma.

...Societal Stigma 1 Running Head: Societal Stigma " " " " " " " High School students are less likely [than adults] to seek help for their mental illnesses due to societal stigma. " Guy Bukovsky" Ms. Fornazar" HSP3U" Dec 12, 2014" " " " " " " " Societal Stigma 2 " Through collecting 21 survey results and analyzing the answers given I was able to draw some conclusions. First off, people who have not been diagnosed with a mental illness are 11.6% more comfortable with talking to the guidance department about mental health; from this result, I can conclude that people who have been diagnosed with a mental illness are feeling shame or fear of stigmatization. In addition, those who have not been diagnosed with a mental illness are 11.67% more comfortable going to guidance in relation to a friend’s mental health. Those people who have been diagnosed with ADHD were generally more comfortable speaking with the guidance department. On the contrary, people who have been diagnosed with a depressive disorder were least likely to feel comfortable speaking with the guidance department. This further exemplifies the stigmatization of depression. The mean of all answers to the question “How comfortable do you feel when it comes to talking about your mental health issues with friends and peers?” is 3.18/5 which is significantly higher than the 2.31/5 and 2.59/5 regarding speaking to faculty and guidance, respectively. So while there is societal......

The topics of resource leveling and resource allocation naturally follow in the subsequent sections. Finally, the chapter concludes with an overview of several of the concepts Goldratt raises in his provocative book Critical Chain. Cases and Readings A case appropriate to the subject of this chapter is: Harvard: 9-613-020 Space Constructors, Inc. This 3-page case involves a simple project where partial crashing has already been planned but more, and less, crashing is also to be considered. The network has some special characteristics that offer some worthwhile lessons for the student. Answers to Review Questions 1. Given the fact that a project’s resource requirements are clearly spelled out in the project’s action plan, why are PMs so concerned with resource allocation? There can be a variety of reasons why resource allocation is of concern to the PM despite having a properly completed action plan. For example: o The action plan only lists general categories of resource requirements such as engineering, purchasing, marketing, and production. In these cases, the project manager must still arrange to get the specific resources (e.g., personnel) needed. o The action plan may only specify how much of the resource is needed and precedence between the activities relationships, it may......

How to Help at Risk Students Graduate

...Introduction An ‘at-risk’ student is a young person at risk, or educationally disadvantaged, if they have been exposed to inadequate or inappropriate educational experiences in the family, school, or community. Many of these students are located in large, mainly urban high schools around the country (Balfanz, 2007). Urban high schools face five common problems: low student engagement, poor prior preparation, low ninth-grade promotion rate, low graduations rates, and isolation from the community (Herlihy & Kemple, 2004). When at-risk students are exposed to such environment everyday, they have a greater probability of dropping out of school (Princiotta & Ryan, 2009) Nationally, 1.3 million members of the public high school class of 2009 failed to graduate with a diploma with the majority of that population being African American, Latino, and Native American (Princiotta & Ryan, 2009). The majority of these populations attend schools in urban high schools in majority cities (Balfanz, 2007). Many schools do not have a system that identifies students who are at-risk of dropping out school, so these students are ignored. And even some schools that have indicators in place, they do not offer adequate assistance to help these students (Princiotta & Ryan, 2009). In urban high schools, difficulty transitioning from middle school to high school can increase dropout rates and reduce on-time graduation (Princiotta & Ryan, 2009). Recent studies show that most ninth graders......

Will a Longer School Year Help or Hurt Us Students

...Will Longer School Year Help or Hurt US Students In the article, “Will Longer School Year Help or Hurt US Students” by Julie Carr Smyth it questions whether or not having a longer school year would be beneficial to students. It highlights the option of continuing school all year long and adding three equal vacations in each third of the year, centered around holidays. I believe that this idea would be smart and that it should be put into place. The first reason why I believe that having a year round school schedule would be beneficial is because it would give the students less time to forget the material they had been studying the grade before. The article states, “Proponents argue that too much knowledge is lost while American kids wile away the summer months apart from their lessons” (Smyth n.p). It has even been tested that student’s test scores are high at the beginning of the school year opposed to at the end before school starts back up, and that only 10-15% of the student body did not lose any knowledge. That means that a whopping 85-90% of the student body did lose knowledge over the summer months. The second reason why a system like this would work is because it would give lower class children a chance to get free school lunches year-round. Smyth states, “Supporters also say a longer school year would give poor children more access to school-provided healthy meals” (Smyth n.p). During the school year some children’s most filling and healthiest meal......

Cheating Does Not Help Students Learn

...Cheating does not Help Students Learn Better In the modern society, almost every student occasionally cheats during tests or exams. It is found more beneficial to cheat rather than study for upcoming examinations. Willfried Decoo argues that 70% of high school students in the United States have at least cheated once in their high school career. However people are not aware of the harmful side effects that cheating brings along such as its addiction, losing self-belief, and the trouble it can cause. Cheating does not help students learn better in their education, but it only harms them. Cheating can be very addicting. It can make an individual think that cheating is the best and only way of getting a high grade in an exam or a test. It is commonly known that students will perform every possible way to stay floating in academic classes. For this reason, it is very likely for students to cheat in classes. The mind of an individual only starts to conclude that the only way of getting a high grade is to cheat. This is where the second topic links in and people feel like they cannot achieve a good grade without cheating. Self-belief is a very important characteristic. Cheating however decreases that characteristic from an individual. After the addiction process is complete, people tend to lose confidence in studying. It is commonly thought that without cheating an individual wont be able to get a high grade. This occurs because people lose self-belief. Dependency occurs......

Do Laptops Help Improve a Students Learning in Their Education?

...Do Laptops Help Improve A Students Learning In Their Education? In high school I was a very technological guy even though it wasn’t appreciated. Not being able to use technology in high school was always an annoyance of mine. I’d always think about how there’s technology that would be useful to a student during school. Who wouldn’t love to have Wikipedia and a spell checker handy at all times? During my high school career, I would always get in trouble for using my phone as a source to look up a word definition on an app. I would hate it very much, only because I would only be looking for knowledge and wasn’t that what school was about? Looking for knowledge and learning ways to use that knowledge. Anyways, I graduated high school and fortunately I was able to go to college. Many questions came to mind about how college was going to be. Would it be better than high school, or would it be just as bad? Coming into college I discovered something totally opposite from my prediction about it. It was probably one of the happiest days of my life coming into college and realizing that technology could be used in classes! I have been doing research for the past 2-3 weeks to figure out if laptops help improve students learning in their educational career in order to find a partially accurate answer. However, problems with this are that teachers say that students tend to go on laptops and forget about class. This is sometimes true but David Silvernail, in his book T.H.E Journal,......
