Got my first real six-string Bought it at the five-and-dime Played it till my fingers bled Was the summer of '69 Me and some guys from school Had a band and we tried real hard Jimmy quit and Joey got married I shoulda known, we'd never get far Oh, when I look back now The summer seemed to last forever And if I had the choice, Yeah, I'd always want to be there Those were the best days of my life Ain't no use in complainin' When you got a job to do Spent my evenin's down at the drive-in And that's where I met you, girl Standin' on your mama's porch, You told me that you'd wait forever Oh, and when you held my hand I knew that it was now or never Those were the best days of my life Oh yeah Back in the summer of '69, uh-huh Yeah, we were killin' time We were young and restless, we needed to unwind I guess nothing can last forever, Forever, no Yeah And now the times are a-changin' Look at everything that's come and gone Every time when I play that old six-string

I think about you, wonder what went wrong Standin' on your mama's porch (that's right) You told me it would last forever Oh and when you held my hand I knew that it was now or never Those were the best days of my life Oh yeah Back in the summer of '69, uh-huh Me and my baby had 69, oh yeah Back in the summer of '69…...

Summer

...It was the first day of summer and I was so excited I got to relax until 10:00am. I was woken up by a delicious smell I wasn’t quite sure what it was but it smelled extremely good. “Are you awake?” mom asked. I replied loudly, “Yes mother.” She told me to hurry down because we needed to discuss something. So I gotten up showered, comb my hair, put my clothes on and headed down the stairs. “Morning mom,” I said. Mom was down here all alone cooking breakfast Pancakes, eggs, grits, and sausage. “Yummy,” I said. Everything looked so good because mom always cooked everything she made from scratch. So I got me a small portion of the breakfast and sat at the table. Mom came along and joined me. She explained to me that I’ll be staying with my dad this summer because she have an important job she had to attend. I wasn’t excited about this because I thought this summer was going to be the summer that mom and I was going to be able to spend time together. I had to be understanding because mom was a travel nurse and when hospitals are short of employers they call people like her to come out to work. So she told me after breakfast pack my clothing she was taking me to the airport my plane leave at 4:00pm. Dad stays in Miami, Florida so I had to pack clothing for that type of weather; which it’s always sunny down that way. So I packed all my shorts, tank top shirts, bathing suits, and sandals. Thirty minutes later “Are you ready?” mom called. I wasn’t ready to leave her but I guess......

Summer

...the summer was hot From an astronomical view, the equinoxes and solstices would be the middle of the respective seasons,[1][2] but a variable seasonal lag means that the meteorological start of the season, which is based on average temperature patterns, occurs several weeks later than the start of the astronomical season.[3] According to meteorologists[4][5],summer extends for the whole months of June, July, and August in the northern hemisphere and the whole months of December, January, and February in the southern hemisphere. Under meteorological definitions, all seasons are arbitrarily set to start at the beginning of a calendar month and end at the end of a month.[6] This meteorological definition of summer also aligns with the commonly viewed notion of summer as the season with the longest (and warmest) days of the year, in which daylight predominates. The meteorological reckoning of seasons is used in Austria, Denmark and the former USSR; it is also used by many in the United Kingdom, where summer is thought of as extending from mid-May to mid-August. In Ireland, the summer months according to the national meteorological service, Met Éireann, are June, July and August. However, according to the Irish Calendar summer begins 1 May and ends 1 August. School textbooks in Ireland follow the cultural norm of summer commencing on 1 May rather than the meteorological definition of 1 June. From the astronomical perspective, days continue to lengthen from equinox to solstice......

Summer

...My perfect summer I never imagined a wonderful summer as the one I have spent in Logan. Global Academy 2012 gave me the opportunity to experience the most unforgettable moments of my life. Despite the cultural shock, the lonely I felt at the beginning and all de embarrassing moments I had, Logan have been the perfect place for me to grow as a person, to improve my English, to make new friends, and to become more independent. I just can describe this summer as my best summer ever, my perfect summer. My most memorable moment in Logan was the ropes course because I was doing really challenging things, things that I never thought I could do. After I achieve my goals at the ropes course and overcame all the challenging things I felt a great satisfaction and self-realization. At the beginning I was shock by American culture but as soon as I started understanding it I enjoy every single moment in Logan. I really loved my first academic track excursions. I went to a restaurant in a small town called Ogden and I tried the Mormon Muffin, it was so delicious. I also had a great time at the Independence Day celebration at Rommie Stadium, the fireworks were amazing. I had never seen so many fireworks in one night. I was so amazed and I took a lot of pictures with my camera. These experiences gave me the opportunity of talk with native speakers and improve my English skills. Shopping in Logan is one of the things I enjoyed the most; the clothes, shoes, and almost everything are so...

Summer Reading

...Khiree Cross Ap Summer Reading Assignment The Awakening By: Kate Chopin July 18, 2013 Part One The setting of The Awakening so far is in the Grand Isle, a popular place for a summer vacation where wealthy people go. The Grand Isle is a spot where all the wealthy Creoles, from New Orleans, go for the summer to relax, and have fun. The time setting seems to be in the early 1900s because of the things they do and the lack of technology. The husband of Edna, Leonce, go away on a trip and on this trip he sends her chocolates which no one in the present time eats anymore. The tone of The Awakening at the start is a relaxed and peaceful one. As the story progresses is becomes a more serious and emotional one. It is serious because Leonce feels as if his wife is carless for her family. She doesn't show too much love nor is affection towards them and that becoming a problem. It is also emotional because Edna is clueless to what he is talking about and feels bad after he tells her off before he leaves for his trip. She is lost and wants to find her own independence, or find herself. Part Two The three characters that I will characterize from this book are Edna, Madamoiselle, and Robert. Edna is a caring and loving wife and mother. She is married to a rich businessman Leonce who is the provider for their family. In the story so far Edna seems as if she is lost or missing something. She seems tired of the lifestyle she is living and is nonchalant about everything. She likes......

Summer of Aviyah

...3/28/13 Screening Report #2: Summer of Aviyah Although it is common to refer to those whom escaped the horrors of the Holocaust as Holocaust survivors, no one truly survived it; they endured it and made it out alive. In the film, Summer of Aviyah, this notion is made clear though the portrayal of the main character’s life, Aviyah. Aviyah and her mother are Holocaust survivors who emigrated and made refuge in the newly founded state of Israel. While they escaped the physical traumas of the Holocaust, the physiological traumas are still clearly present for Aviyah’s mother. Aviyah may have little to no memory of her life before Israel, but it undoubtedly shaped who she is too. The film begins with Aviyah rehearsing for a play and she insists to her teacher that her mother will not come. To her surprise, her mother shows up right as she is about to sing, but then she freezes up due to the immense shock. After leaving, her mother notices lice in her hair, which leads up to the scene that I find to be most shocking. Just as it was done in the concentration camps, Aviyah’s mother fully shaves her head. In this moment of chaos, as Aviyah is crying and begging her mother not to, it felt almost as if her mother was trying to show her in a small for what it was like in the concentration camps. It was a devastating scene. Aviyah is a young girl that shares the same aspirations and dream that many young girls have. She simply wants to be a part of the group, but she cannot be......

The Summer Solstice

...THE SUMMER SOLSTICE Nick Joaquin THE MORETAS WERE spending St. John’s Day with the children’s grandfather, whose feast day it was. Doña Lupeng awoke feeling faint with the heat, a sound of screaming in her ears. In the dining room the three boys already attired in their holiday suits, were at breakfast, and came crowding around her, talking all at once. “How long you have slept, Mama!” “We thought you were never getting up!” “Do we leave at once, huh? Are we going now?” “Hush, hush I implore you! Now look: your father has a headache, and so have I. So be quiet this instant—or no one goes to Grandfather.” Though it was only seven by the clock the house was already a furnace, the windows dilating with the harsh light and the air already burning with the immense, intense fever of noon. She found the children’s nurse working in the kitchen. “And why is it you who are preparing breakfast? Where is Amada?” But without waiting for an answer she went to the backdoor and opened it, and the screaming in her ears became wild screaming in the stables across the yard. “Oh my God!” she groaned and, grasping her skirts, hurried across the yard. In the stables Entoy, the driver, apparently deaf to the screams, was hitching the pair of piebald ponies to the coach. “Not the closed coach, Entoy! The open carriage!” shouted Doña Lupeng as she came up. “But the dust, señora—“ “I know, but better to be dirty than to be boiled alive. And what ails your wife, eh?......

Summers Memo

...Summers memo was a 1991 memo on trade liberalization that was written by Lant Pritchett and signed by Lawrence Summers while he was Chief Economist of the World Bank. It included a section that both Summers and Pritchett say was sarcastic that suggested dumping toxic waste in third-world countries for perceived economic benefits [Least Developed Countries]? I can think of three reasons: 1) The measurements of the costs of health impairing pollution depends on the earnings. From this point of view a given amount of health impairing pollution should be done in the country with the lowest cost, which will be the country with the lowest wages. I think the economic logic behind dumping a load of toxic waste in the lowest wage country is impeccable and we should face up to that. 2) The costs of pollution are likely to be non-linear as the initial increments of pollution probably have very low cost. I've always thought that under-populated countries in Africa are vastly UNDER-polluted, their air quality is probably vastly inefficiently low compared to Los Angeles or Mexico City. Only the lamentable facts that so much pollution is generated by non-tradable industries (transport, electrical generation) and that the unit transport costs of solid waste are so high prevent world welfare enhancing trade in air pollution and waste. 3) The demand for a clean environment for aesthetic and health reasons is likely to have very high income elasticity. The concern over an agent that causes......

A Summer Reading

...A Summer’s Reading Respect is a very dominant and important factor in the story of Bernard Malamud, “A Summer’s Reading.” The reach for respect from the people around him causes a lot of dilemma within the main character, George Stoyonovic. And those dilemmas led to consequences that George hated. George, a high school drop out, can not get any job during one summer. He decides to read the magazines found at home. But when he met Mr. Cattanzara, he immediately lies about the hundred books he is reading, in order for Mr. Cattanzara to respect him as well as to be proud of him. Respect is a form of acknowledgement of one’s existence. Respect is very important to everybody. Respect also gives a person a sense of confidence that he is not a failure and contradicts the idea that he is not good enough. People want respect because they want others to know how good they are. Though everybody wants it, most people often take it for granted. The irony of it all is that people wants it so much that they would do anything just to get it. In the story, the theme Respect is very important for everybody was shown a couple of times. An example of these scenes is when George was contemplating whether or not he should attend the night classes. “He has considered registering in a night high school, only he did not like the idea of teachers always telling him what to do. He felt that they had not respected him.” He decides that since he has......

Mr. Summers

...Mr. Summers “The luck will always be with me. Summer, summer, summer, oh Mr. Summer. What a wonderful summer. The grass is green; the flowers bloomed gracefully, fresh and warm summer. I am Mr. Summer, one of the leaders of our village. This day is traditionally special for me and for my villagers, because it is the lottery day. Seeing the children happy while gathering the stones is good to see. It seems ironic being happy, but I really am. Sometimes I think if the person in our village considers me unfair because of me being a leader. I don’t remember the reason on how I become the leader of this lottery, luckily I still am. I know that the people pitied me because I have a nagging wife, the agony of us being a couple. I don’t even have a child to take care of. But still, I am glad that the people here in our town respect me. Not even one tried to challenge me. I have the authority in this town. I control the people here in this town. But sometimes, I dreamed being stoned! I panicked, I startled, and I am terrified! What will I do? Will that happen? Will they stone me to death when I became the chosen one? NO! That must not happen! I need to make rules, I need to influence and educate them with my policy. I need to trick them! It is now time to draw the paper. Here I am about to get the paper in my hand. The people are staring at me with fear and joy. As I get the paper, smiling, I read ‘Tessie Hutchinson’ with a relief on my face. She must be stoned to death. I will......

Summer School

...The International summer school is a good opportunity for me to develop multiple perspectives through its summer program. I expect to meet different people and learn from all kind of ideas. The diverse cross-cultural environment of the program will enrich me in different ways, I simply enjoy this kind of place where harmony between different cultures seems to exist, but the most important of all is that I will be committed to complete the whole program since I have a strong commitment to my education and a big desire to learn. I am majoring in International Business with a specialization in Finance and the courses that the university offers are matching my degree plan, so I thought of expanding my education as well as my aspiration to explore a new culture and civilization. Studying and understanding the language and the cultural aspects are crucial when doing business in any foreign country, I believe that this program would greatly benefit me in my career path. I am an open-minded person who loves to discover new countries and new cultures, and the Spanish culture triggered my attention. Spain is the adequate country to take Spanish classes and develop the learning in the daily life. Thanks to the university’s summer program it is an opportunity for me to learn in class and out of class, and no one would miss out this occasion. I have read about other cultures in books and seen them on television but that does not compare to the feeling you get when you throw......

Summer Camps

...It is not easy for parents to make the decision to send their child away into the waiting arms of strangers who promise to take care of them — people who promise to show them the wonders of nature, fun, new skills, and friendships. As a parent of two children, even I struggle with the idea, and I have been around summer camps my entire life. The world needs the next generation to be more tolerant of each other’s views, ideology, and beliefs. Summer camp is an opportunity for children to be exposed to the best of human character. Carefully selected role models are dedicated to showing your child how to have fun, learn from others, and make friends in person rather than online. Camp allows kids to meet people from all over the world, every race, culture, and socioeconomic level. I still remember one of my counselors, Danny, from England, explaining to me, “The world is full of excuses. It doesn’t matter where you came from or what has happened to you. At the end of the day you choose how you treat others.” There is something magical about a summer camp experience. Each and every camp in the world is different. Not merely because of geography or location, but because of the traditions and people who have touched the camp. Every camp has hidden treasures of history and traditions that give it character and identity. Even with agency camps like the YMCA where there is a common mission, every camp is unique in its style, program, games, geography, traditions, and......
