Conventional Crowd

Sunday, July 8th, I had the incredible honor and privilege to address 1,000 remarkable people from around the world at a conference called the World Domination Summit in Portland, Oregon. The conference creator, Chris Guillebeau asked attendees that wanted to share their work from the main stage to submit their stories in advance to be considered. Out of over 300 submissions, the story of Kids of the Gulf was chosen to be featured in an attendee stories forum on the last day of the conference.

The Kansas Graziers Association (KGA) Winter Conference will be held Saturday, January 19, 2013, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Courtyard Mariott Hotel in Salina, Ks. “Back to the Basics of Grazing Management” is the theme for this year’s conference.

Expressive Crowd

(PETERBOROUGH) The PCVS auditorium was overflowing with Raider spirit Wednesday morning (March 21 2014) as students welcomed Canadian comedian Rick Mercer to their school.
Mr. Mercer’s visit allowed him to get to know the students of the school that raised the most money towards his Spread the Net campaign.

Other nonhuman actors play no small role in manifesting the crowd-as-crowd — and by (intensive) extension, the expressive potential of the athletes on the basketball court. The public address announcer, cheerleaders, jumbotron, canned sound effects, in-house music: all of these purportedly exist to "enhance the game experience" for paying consumers. THOUSANDS of people flocked to the Vatican March 18 2013 – and heard the new Pope break with tradition. Pope Francis spoke only in Italian and delivered off-the-cuff remarks, rather than read from a written speech.

Wednesday 24.07.2013 has been the real day for Pope Francis to start business with the World Youth Day week with his visit to the Holy Marian Shrine of Aparecida.
This place is where is exposed the tiny statue of the Holy Virgin Mary which peasants found dragging in a river in 1717 and on picking it they immediately realized how it had powers to cure various maladies. A shrine was built to house the holy object which attracts
11 million pilgrims every year from all over Brazil and Latin America. The statue has some dark colour somewhere which the local cardinal archbishop interpreted as something symbolizing the suffering of the poor Brazilians, in particular the Afro-Brazilians for whom the Church has for long

Riot police disperse student protesters during a "lightning rally" near the U.S. Embassy in Manila, Philippines, Tuesday, to protest alleged U.S. intervention in Philippine affairs. The protesters denounced alleged U.S. role in the current global economic crisis that officials predict would cut jobs in the country to about 1.7 million. AP/Bullit Marquez

Just take a look at the crowd. What do you see? Do you notice, like I did, hundreds of arms stretching up and forward at a 45 degree angle, holding phones, blithely filming the fire?I don’t know why this photo disturbs me. Perhaps it’s because of the subtle reminiscence to photos of the Third Reich. Or perhaps it’s because on This American Life this week they talked about what it would be like to contact aliens for the first time.

Philippines ‘breaks world tree-planting record’
Manila (AFP) – Philippine officials said Saturday they had set a new world record for the most trees planted in an hour, with 3.2 million seedlings sown as part of a national forestation programme.
Official certification from Guinness World Records will still take weeks but government officers expressed confidence they had broken the old record of 1.9 million trees planted in India on August 15, 2011.
The trees were planted in six different areas on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao by an army of 160,000 people including government employees, students and volunteers, said the regional environment director Marc Fragada.
“Our official count is about 3.2 million trees in one hour. But we are still getting reports. We still have to prepare the packaging of documentary evidence (for Guinness),” he told AFP.
The trees planted were a mix of forest varieties as well as commercial crops like cacao, coffee and rubber trees, he said.
“They were chosen by the planters in hopes that the local people will take good care of them because it will be part of their livelihood,” he said.
The organisers had originally targeted 4.6 million trees to be planted in one hour, said Environment Undersecretary Demetrio Ignacio.
“Based on our count, we have planted more (than India) but whether the record is broken, only Guinness can say that,” he told AFP.
The Philippine archipelago, once densely-forested, has lost much of its forest cover due to development, logging and slash-and-burn farming.
Official figures show the area covered with “closed forest cover” declined from 2.56 million hectares (6.32 acres) in 2003 to 1.93 million in 2010.
President Benigno Aquino has launched a programme to reverse that, targeting the planting of 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares before he steps down in 2016.…...

Sunday

...Sunday in the Park The text ”Sunday in the Park” mainly deals with the concerns of marriage, the individual roles of the partners in the relationship, and how you can be together for a long time, without noticing that some of the vital values are missing, from the person you love. I believe the characters in this text are victims of this very thing, where the mother realizes that her husband can't defend her in the way that she wants him to. She probably married him to feel safe and secure in a way, possibly financially since you have no knowledge of her actually having a job herself. In the park however, she wants her husband, Morton, to stand up for her and her son, even though she isn't a supporter of violence and knows that it'll end up with Morton getting hurt quite badly if he does stand up for them. As a result, she takes on the role of the family “guardian” since her husband proves too weak for it. You can see that in this last bit of the story: “But her voice stopped him. She was shocked to hear it, thin and cold and penetrating with contempt. “Indeed?” she heard herself say. “You and who else?” (P. 2, lines 139-141)” This shows how she basically mimics the menacing man in the park, who she more or less must see as a “real man,” compared to husband at least. Those two men seem like a clash between two social standings/classes, Morton being a rather smart middle class guy and the other man probably working class with a not-so-long education. I say this......

Never on Sunday

...Case Study – Never on Sunday 1. The personal beliefs of McCoy and the Cathy families influenced the organizational culture by only expecting from their employees what they expect of themselves. People deserve a day of rest. They deserve a break. The McCoy’s and Cathy’s share their values and beliefs and incorporate this into the expected behaviors. Their cultural rules based on their Evangelical Christian belief in their faith through letting their “feet do it” shows the commitment to their God through what they do. 2. The lessons for developing high performance organizational cultures for business that are not family run is that it is proven effective. My Morning

...Oscar Islas Professor Preasmyer Persuasive Writing 26 January, 2013 My Morning (Ex 14.11) I have a really hard time waking up in the morning, so I put on three alarms to wake me up. I put one on at 7:30am just too kind of get me shaken-up and be aware that it’s time to be up. Then I put another one at 7:40am to remind me to wake up again, if this alarm goes on it usually because I am still in bed. The third alarm I put on goes off at 7:45am. Now, if this alarm goes on I literally jump out of my bed and race my way to class, but I usually never wait that that long. The time I am usually up is 7:40am. When I get up I just lay there for a couple minutes and gather my thoughts. I like to run things through my head that I need to get done in the day. After I am done processing my thoughts and know what I have to get done today I reach over to my desk and grab my phone. I check all my social media before I get up from my bed. I check my Facebook notifications, and reply to anything friends comment on my status updates. After my Facebook quick check, I scroll through my Twitter and see what the popular trends are for the day. Usually it tells me the breaking news or anything that is happening in the world. Then I check my Instagram feed, instagram is a social media where friends you follow post pictures and edit them with awesome photo effects. Lastly, I check my emails. I usually hope and pray one of my professors cancel class but that never happens. When I am done......

Morning Devours

...The Morning Devours the Human Spirit Barry Dempster’s, “ The Morning Devours,” is a poem that is based on the life that surrounds him. His description of the setting is a key part in the poem, because he is explaining what events take place around him, and how eventually everything that happens in life gets “devoured” in the end, so we should escape our dreaded lives while we can and do something we love. We are scared to go against the system, and so we end up conforming to society. The poem creates a feeling of despair as the main theme centralizes on a universal event that occurs in each of our lives; a cycle of the same routines and rituals that we experience each day trapping us in a feeling of helplessness. It is evident from the first stanza the tone in which the poem will take as Dempster uses similes and figurative language to create a mood of hopelessness. For instance, Dempster compares the movement of the wind outside the house to a predatory bird (Dempster, 1. 1-2). This simile creates the illusion of an aggressive noise and an unpleasant atmosphere to awake to. Furthermore, the poet uses figurative language to depict the rays of sunlight streaming through the room by describing “the sun leaping through windows like a tiger” (1. 5-6). In most cases sunlight symbolizes hope and warmth, however, by comparing the rays of light to the fierceness of a tiger, the reader gets the impression that the sunlight does not signal the hope of another morning and a fresh......

Morning Beach

...Morning Beach It is early in the morning and the sky is still dim. The immured beach is quiet besides a flock of seagulls pecking at leftover food wrappers. The yellow, phosphorescent sunrise emerges in the distance. The warm, glowing rays greet me with a friendly hello. Miles of shimmering blue water and brown sugar sand encompass me. As I walk along blanket of sand, along the shore, my footprints show my path and are quickly washed away by the waves, turning the shore into a blank canvas. The crashing waves splash my skin feels as refreshing as an ice cold drink on a summer day. The howling wind whistles along the beach like an arriving train as I return to the main area. The rhythmically pounding waves sound peaceful. I walk to a long strip of shops to admire their exquisite commodities. Small, beachfront shops prepare for the day’s customers who will rummage through their merchandise. Key-holders set the seaside products outside their shops. Fashionable clothes and jewelry are propped in the windows, beside brightly colored seashells. I smell fresh coffee and pastries as I pass a Starbucks Coffee shop. As I continue my morning stroll, I only see joggers along the usually busy sidewalks of Clearwater Avenue. I head back to the beach. Some friends play a competitive game of Frisbee near the beach’s pier. The soft blanket of sand cushions one of the adolescents as he reaches high and then dives for the disk. I look to my left and hear the beach is now filled with...

One Morning

...The Lost Stranger It was just like any other winter morning at work. There were barely any customers at the auto parts store where I worked at and the temperatures were below freezing. There was a blizzard the night before and the streets hadn’t been plowed yet. I had worked the night shift the day before and unfortunately opened the store this morning because I was covering for another employee who had called in sick. Coffee, donuts and the freezing weather were the only things that kept me awake because I had not been able to get enough sleep. We were not busy so I went outside for a smoke. A couple minutes passed by and I noticed a car pulling into the parking lot and it sound like there was something wrong with it, it was making an unusual grinding and squealing noise. It sounded as if the belt was rubbing against some metal part or the pulley bearing had gone bad. As he got out of the car and was walking towards the store I put my cigarette out and threw it in the overflowing cigarette disposal. The man was in a very nice suit and was clean shaved with his hair slicked back but looked tired and seemed like he had been on the road for a while. He proceeded to walk in the store; I walked in with him and asked if he needed any help. He told me that he was from out of town and was trying to get to his daughters house but the car kept making the squealing noise and he was worried if there was something major wrong with the car and if he would even be able to make it to......

Mornings in Jenin

...Saja Hassouneh 21210344 Mornings in Jenin The novel, Mornings in Jenin, starts with prolepsis scene when Amal, the protagonist (dynamic character) and also the autodiegetic narrator, was 47 years old. The novel opens with a stunning prelude set in Jenin in 2002. Amal, the granddaughter of the founder of the family Yehya, looks directly into the soldier’s eyes. He is about to kill her as she thinks while he is pointing his gun towards her front head: ‘’He had killed before, but never while looking his victim in the eyes. Amal saw that, and she felt his troubled soul amid the carnage around them. She knew, from the soldier’s blink, that she would live. The petitions of memory pulled her back, and still back, to a home she had never known. ‘’ The prelude sets up the novel giving readers a view of events that will happen later in Amal’s live: providing a background, which is Jenin in 2002; revealing what’s going to happen to Amal in the future and what got her to this current moment; establishing the tone of the work; and introducing the theme of the novel which is the conflict between the Palestinians and Israel. Moreover, the author reveals Amal’s character as an American citizen (and not as a Palestinian) to disclose to the readers if the officials might express regret for killing Americans unlike Palestinians. The prelude doesn’t tell whether the Israeli soldier got the guts to kill Amal or not but at the end of the novel she got shot and died while protecting her......

This metaphor also describes things in nature, it shows that the speaker see herself as an unique, and special. “This Morning” it’s a metaphor for the present time, is that she found herself or appreciates herself. In the last stanza, it says “And all day I have been a black bell ringing I survive, survive, survive.” it means, out of all the things that she has been through, now she has finally got through her problems and found the person she truly is, in Lucille Clifton’s case, it means she found where she stood in the society as an African - American. The speaker kept repeating “I met myself” in line 3 and line 12 to show that she survives from her problems. A simile is a figure of speech that......

A Wet Morning

...It was a wet morning in Pune, as the drizzling was spread throughout the city, trucks and cars drove fast on the road as cockroaches and ants, I was sitting in an auto, thinking about the excitement level, inside me. How it use to go, high up in the sky, when I had first came here, and how much, deep under the ground it was now; The cracking and vibrating sound of the auto was constantly ragging through my ears, as the auto-driver dragged the auto tiredly on the upward sloping road ; he arithmetically accelerated again and moved it on to the complex gate, to stop. I paid him the money, and he left as quickly as he came. I walked over to the building, where my friend lived, and went straight to the flat on the 10th floor; Lali , his cook and cleaner, let me in and went back to his work; I walked over to the bed room and saw three guys on the bed; they all had their faces covered in their own blankets; The one closest to me, moved and shook it off. It was my friend Garry. He opened his eyes, and pointedly asked for two minutes. I told him to take his time, and came out in the balcony. I thought 'How all these years I had seen people pass out, graduate, and start their post graduation like my friend Garry, 'How I had been stuck in a college, with a course, I had no interest in' 'How I kept moving......

These activities help a person to reduce stress and put order in a busy day in case this person performs them in a timely manner and following a clear and organized sequence. Life becomes easier with a good routine. My morning routine School days are more complicated than they may appear. My morning starts at 6:45 a.m. My daily challenge is to wake up on time, get dressed, wake up my two children, get them dressed, prepare breakfast, prepare lunch boxes, assist them in brushing their teeth, combing their hair, and other routine hygiene activities. I need to check if their school bags are ready and take off to school. Traffic represents a daily constraint. There is always a choice to make regarding which road to take to arrive to school and drop the kids before the bell. This morning routine is a process that needs continuous improvement. A flowchart may help visualize the different steps and identify areas where there may be room for improvement. It is indeed important to set up a good process to help me start my day without rush or stress. The main metric to assess this operation would be time. According to Chase, Jacobs and Aquilano, utilization is the most common metric used to assess the strengths and......

Sunday in the Park

...Engelsk aflevering: Sunday in the park B.) - I think that the theme in this story is a bit of violence and that’s only because of the big man and the fact that there almost were started a fight between Morton and the big man. I also think that there also is another theme and that I family. In this story you see two different kind of families and I would say that Morton and his family is a family from the upper class if you can say that, and the big man is from the more low class family that don’t care for manners or polite behaviour. - I think the ending the mom to Larry is a bit ashamed of those two because her husband almost got into a fight and her son is behaving like a spoiled kid that doesn’t know how to behave and she is very concerned what the other people in town thinks of her I think. And suddenly Morton snaps because of the big man have gotten him in a bad mood and when Larry cried all the way home Morton snaps and was just about to hit Larry so he would be quiet but the mother stops him and protected Larry, and that is a good example for a man that can’t control his temper but have to count to ten some times instead of becoming like the big man. - The mother to Larry I think is too afraid and just won’t interfere. And then just sits and think of what she would have done instead of doing it, but luckily there didn’t happen anything. Because if there did there would not be much of his husband left because the big man would probably just have broke him like a......
