Self-Assessment of Leadership Practices
While writing this paper, I lost my job as a Mine Operations Coordinator, and before I was notified of being officially laid off, my job was already on edge of being around for another month. The mining project I worked for had questionable growth for within the company and interests in supplying funding for future advancement of the project became a difficult battle. With impending layoffs, miners began to work slower and were more focused on what their next career step would be rather than what was the necessary daily tasks. This in turn effected how I could properly maintain productivity and mining advancements for the project, and with the impending layoff how to properly distribute my tasks and projects to coworkers who would remain with the company after the layoffs. My understanding of who I was as an up and coming leader became a struggle with the idea that I would be unemployed very soon. I gained a better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses, along with what areas I should work on.
Seven Habits Profile and Findings After completing Franklin Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and associated profile, I came to understand a bit more about myself and how I evaluate business practices. The profile showed that close to “Very Good” on every category with my lowest categories were Life Balance, Put First Things First, Synergize and Sharpen the Saw. I can see why these would be my lowest categories. My previous job had me doing swing shifts between night and day on a 11 day on and 4 days off rotation for 12.5-hour work days. My personal health took an interesting toll with having to switch my sleep cycles every 11-12 days, not getting enough physical exercise every week and often not seeing the sun during the winter months. Balancing this with my social life was rather difficult, being only able…...

...Leadership is important in managing and organizing the structure of the organization while trying to maintain a profitable company that takes into consideration employees, shareholders, customers and board of directors, etc. Another attribute of a great leader is managing diversity in the workplace. However, diversity includes many different issues and needs to be managed and if done properly can lead to competitive advantages for the company. Thomas A. Kochan, professor at MIT, stated “Diversity can enhance business performance only if the proper training is provided and the organizational culture supports diversity (Dubrin, 2010). Managing Cultural Diversity: Managing cultural diversity is not an easy task, however, when incorporated into the organizations core values, is makes it easier to incorporate (Dubrin, 2010). Below is a diagram that provides a breakdown of areas or issues that may need to be looked at to evaluate the possibility of creating and leading a culturally diverse organization. These areas may help to identify areas where a competitive advantage may be available in the organization. In such a culturally diverse world and as the organization makes decisions that will impact them globally, these discussions are vital for the success of the company. Whether not decisions are made to implement or not to implement decisions based on diversity within the organization, these ideas, may identify some of the organizations strengths and weaknesses. ......

...My Leadership Practices and Future C200 Managing Organizations and Leading People September 19th, 2014 My Leadership Practices and Future This following will outline my personal leadership practices and potential future leadership. To analyze my leadership qualities I will use the Seven Habits Profile and a leadership theory to determine my strengths, weaknesses, and areas of opportunity for improvement. In conclusion, I will determine the best recommendations for long-term improvement as well as SMART goals, or short-term courses of action, for leadership improvement. Seven Habits Profile The Seven Habits Profile revealed that I rank as outstanding in two categories, very good in six categories, and good in just one category. This seems to highlight what I am most exemplary at in terms of leadership, what I am just proficient at, and what presents itself as an opportunity for improvement. The main two strengths include having a work-life balance and being a proactive problem solver. An area of opportunity as indicated by the profile would be having the ability to synergize which is a combination of seeking the views of others and making creative decisions. The two strengths point to qualities I have constantly tried to improve upon. Earlier in my career, I was a bit of a workaholic and tended to bring work home with me. This resulted in a dismal personal life which eventually permeated negativity into my professional life as well. In light......

...her ability to create and nurture deep relationships with those around her. As a woman, her style lines up with studies that show women are more likely to excel in some of the key abilities that successful interactive leaders possess (Daft, 2014). The CIO is also an employee-centered leader. The IT&S Southern Division balances approximately 300 projects within its portfolio at any given time. Considering this workload clear goals must be set and carried out through the talented employees that are distributed into specialized areas of the hierarchal structure. The CIO must depend on the department heads and managers of each area to efficiently and effectively complete the tasks required to meet these goals. The CIO initiates structure by meeting with the leadership team and together they set clear tasks and goals for the organization. Once the goals are agreed upon and communicated to the organization, the CIO provides the support needed to meet the goals. Her support consists of giving time to meet with managers and staff to listen and give advice, as well as, the resources and tools the teams need to meet the goals. The empowerment and consideration she gives to the managers to make their own decisions and lead their specialized areas assists in increasing output and the autonomy encourages them to be more engaged in the projects. With one of the stronger leadership qualities of the CIO being relationship building, the CIO is able to use the situation leadership......

...Task Stream 2 Microbiology can be broken down into categorizations based upon the environmental conditions necessary for organisms in which to grow. Two large categories of microorganisms are those requiring oxygen to live (obligate aerobes) and those which can grow with oxygen but have the ability to also grow without it (facultative aerobes). The obligate aerobes produce more energy from nutrients than anaerobes by using oxygen as the “final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain, which produces most of the ATP in these organisms”(Betsy & Keogh, 2005, p.104). The facultative microorganisms are able to use oxygen but can also go without by using fermentation or anaerobic respiration when it is not available (Betsy & Keogh,2005). The microorganisms being cultured in our first task (Lactobacillus acidophilus and Staphylococcus epidermidis) are obligate aerobes. Microorganisms can grow in a variety of conditions with temperature being one of those variables, but the types we frequently encounter in our environment thrive in fairly warm temperatures. Both Lactobacillus acidophilus and Staphylococcus epidermidis are examples of these, which are referred to as mesophiles. Extreme temperatures (as in deep freezing or auotoclaves for example) are effective in destroying microorganisms due to their inability to thrive outside of more moderate temperatures). Growth of these two organisms would be optimized by remaining between 25 and 40 degrees celsius (Betsy...

...Task 2, Community Health (C228) Edward Croston Western Governors University Task 2, Community Health (C228) MEASLES Measles was at one time in the not too distant past, a killer of those that became infected. Measles has been around for centuries. The first published, written account of the disease was in the ninth century by a Persian doctor. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website on measles, it was not until 1757 that a Scottish physician, named Francis Home, proved that something infectious in the blood was causing the disease. By the early 1900’s, the United States began requiring every healthcare provider and laboratory to report all identified cases, with approximately 6,000 deaths being related to measles each year. Almost all children contracted the disease by the time they were the age of 15, with an estimated yearly infection rate of three to four million United States citizens. Each year, it is estimated, 400 to 500 people died from measles, 48,000 hospitalized, and 4,000 developing encephalitis as a side effect of the disease. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine was made available to the public in 1963. The MMR has significantly reduced the reported cases of measles. In the year 2000 measles was declared eradicated in the United States. But since then, the disease has returned from time to time. ("Measles History," 2014, p. 2) Measles is a virus that has an incubation period of approximately 14 days. It is......

...TASK 2: ORGANIZATION AND LEADERSHIP ANALYSIS WESTERN GOVERNORS UNIVERSITY Table of Contents Reflection on Seven Habits Profile2 Personal Leadership Strengths3 Personal Leadership Weaknesses5 Recommendation for Personal Leadership6 SMART Goals7 Specific Actions7 References9 Organization and Leadership Analysis Reflection on Seven Habits Profile I believe that the results after completing the seven habits profile prove that my transactional leadership style is intrinsic to my natural self. Simply put, transactional leaders work within the culture that exists and exert energy on the things within their power to control (Biscontini, 2015). My scores in each of the seven habits can directly relate to characteristics of a transactional leader. First, Category 3 of the profile, is a clear example. I have a high internal locus of control and know I have the ability to change my environment when necessary to achieve my own desired outcomes. Transactional leaders are very results-driven (Bass, 1990). In order to achieve such outcomes, I begin with the end in mind by not putting off tasks, adhering to a schedule, and also by setting up my next week on the Friday before. In relation to work tasks, I find that I am disciplined and do not let the truly important things get lost in the shuffle. However, in relation to my personal life, I struggle with balancing the importance of living a long and healthy life with the importance of living an enjoyable......

C200 Task 2

...Task 2: Self-Assessment of Leadership Practices Assessment Code: C200 Student Name: Shery Marson Student ID: # 000000000 Date: April 27, 2016 Self-Assessment of Leadership Practices Leadership is defined as the ability to influence people towards attaining their goals. The objective of my study is to assess myself on my leadership practices as I interact with others as we work towards attaining organizational goals and making the company I work for more successful both now and in the future. If leadership is the influence of one person over others to aid and to support their role in order to achieve the combined purpose, then it is my desire to become that type of leader. Leadership is not a role or a position but can be summed up as an act of achieving the tasks assigned. The whole situation of success and failure is determined by the role the leader plays. It has been said if you are the source of inspiration or the force that drives others then you are the path to the top of the ladder and you are their leader. Leadership I believe is the heart and soul of an organization. Do I have the right style and qualities to inspire and mold others and inspire them to be the best they can be as they perform their jobs? By a study of my strengths and weakness and taking the Seven Habits profile I will be able to find out more about my leadership abilities. It is my desire to be a leader that will empower others by encouragement, providing them the right tools, to......

...a more even work/life balance. Sometimes I should prioritize caring for my family the way I prioritize caring for my employees. I need to invest in my family’s emotional bank accounts. These two areas together will help me to sharpen my sword, which is another area in which the Seven Habits Profile indicates improvement is needed. Another area of weakness for me is failing to begin with the end in mind. I am guilty of making a list of tasks or goals and not prioritizing them. Often I get caught up in what is due next, the next deadline, rather than working on the most important item. Focusing on taking control of the things that are within my circle of influence is part of this prioritization. Servant leaders collaborate well, are caring, value people and empower others (Focht & Ponton, 2015). Having scored more highly on those areas that involved synergizing well with others, encouraging everyone’s success, and investing in their emotional bank accounts, I believe my leadership style to be servant leadership. A.2 - The Center for Servant Leadership defines a servant leader as a leader that “focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong” and “shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible.” (Robert K Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership, What is Servant Leadership, n.d,). Sokall studied the correlation between servant leadership and employee......
