Career advancement, higher pay, and a desire to better myself are a few of many reasons why a college education is important to me. The goals I set for myself earlier in life did not contain a college education. Honestly, as soon as I graduated High School I was burnt out. I had no motivation to further my education. I soon entered into the Sheriff’s academy and went down the path of Law Enforcement. In the back of my mind I always knew I would be better off had I went to college first, but I never did anything about it. I always made excuses why I couldn’t pursue my degree. An excuse like it is too expensive or I don’t have the time. Recently I realized a higher education was a necessity. Not only was it a necessity but it was possible.
One aspect I realized was the huge incentive other deputies were receiving for having a bachelor’s degree. In the Sheriff’s Department our contract mandates a ten percent incentive pay be awarded to those deputies who possess a bachelor’s degree. This incentive is huge and can add up to thousands of dollars every year. I realized I was dumb if I didn’t take the advantage of the huge pay raise I could receive just for going back to school. Completing my degree will instantly increase my lifetime earnings by ten percent. This will greatly impact my life my future and the future of my family. It will give me the ability to provide for my family, in a way, I never would have been able to had I not taken this opportunity.
Having a bachelor degree says a lot about your character and work ethic. It is almost impossible to climb the corporate ladder or rise through the ranks, so to speak, without a degree. Kelci Lucier (2013) wrote, “Consequently, having a degree now will open doors for the future, which will in turn open more doors and make you more marketable later ... and the cycle continues.” I plan on applying for promotions in the…...

Obtaining knowledge through a college education is of utmost importance to me. I will be the first in my family to graduate college with degree of knowledge. Knowledge is so vast that there is no exact definition to define it. The definition of knowledge for me, is acquiring information and skills to prepare me for life’s obstacles. One of life’s greatest obstacles that knowledge renders you for, is success in a profession or trade. “The Bureau of Labor......

Why College Education Is Important to Me

...2014 Why College Education Is Important To Me Growing up I did not see a college education in my future due to its price tag. As my parents brought home just enough money every week to get by, I decided during the 11th grade in high school that I would rather work and make money than stay in school. I left school, received my G.E.D. a year later, all while working a full time job at the neighborhood pizzeria. A few years had passed, I landed a better job in an office setting as a typist. After working there for a little over 5 years, I realized this is not what I want to do for the rest of my life. Being a typist was something I was good at; however, I yearned for something bigger and better. I tried several times to find another job, but there seemed to be one obstacle in my way, these better jobs required more than a G.E.D. or High School Diploma, they required a college degree. After several turn downs, careful thought, and consideration, I decided it was time for me to give this whole college thing a try. By this time I am now 26 years old with a 2 year old son, how am I possibly going to go to school and have time to study while being a stay-at-home mother? That’s when I started researching what opportunities were out there for me besides the standard college education. This is where I discovered “Distance Learning” with Ashworth College. Here I am a little over a decade later going for my college education. During the last 11 years, I have learned that a college......
