The Last of the Mohicans
The action of the story takes place in 1757 between the English and the French for possession of the Continent. Three men, the last of a vanishing Mohicans are on the frontier are traveling west to find a new home. The oldest is Chingachgook, the last chief of the Mohican tribe. With him is his son, Uncas, and an adopted son, a white man named Nathaniel Poe, who also goes by the name “ Hawkeye”.
Major Duncan Heyward, of the British Army, has arrived in Albany. He has been sent to serve under Colonel Munro, the commander of Fort William Henry. Heyward has also been given the assignment of escorting the colonel’s two daughters, Cora and Alice, to the fort to join their father. He is a family friend, and in love with Cora, and proposes to her before they leave. She does not give him an answer. Major Heyward, the two women, and a troop of British soldiers march through the rugged countryside for the fort. They are led by a single guide, Magua, a warrior of the Huron tribe. Unexpectedly, Magua leads the party into an ambush, where all are killed except Heyward and the women. The fight, however, is interrupted by the arrival of Chingachgook and his sons, who kill the enemy warriors, but Magua escape. The major and the women are now stranded and the Mohicans and Hawkeye agree to accompany them the rest of the way. During this journey, Cora begins to form a bond with Hawkeye, and Heyward notices.
When they arrive near the fort, they find it under siege by the French. They enter the fort during the attack, and are greeted by Colonel Munro, asking Major Heyward about reinforcements. The colonel admits to Heyward and the others that the fort is about to fall. While there, Cora and Hawkeye share a passionate kiss. Heyward begins to suspect Cora’s attraction to Hawkeye, and erupts in jealousy. In response, Cora finally tells him she will not marry him.
The fort falls, but the French general, paroles the remaining British troops and allows them safe passage to Albany. It is revealed that Magua and his Huron army are with the French. In a secret meeting, Magua reveals his hatred for Colonel Munro, and his desire for revenge for the murder of his family.
The next day, Colonel Munro and everyone else march with the British from the fort. In the countryside, Magua and his Huron warriors ambush the British, and Magua kills Colonel Munro. Hawkeye and the Mohicans fight their way through, leading Cora, Alice, and Heyward from the battle, though Magua later captures the major and the women, and takes them prisoner.
At a Huron village, Magua presents the women and the officer to a sachem, a chief, in hopes of gaining recognition as a war leader. But his appeals are interrupted by Hawkeye, who has come to plead for the lives of the prisoners. Finally the sachem rules that while Heyward is to go back to the British and Alice is to be given to Magua, Cora is to be burned alive. Hawkeye asks Heyward, who is serving as translator between Hawkeye and the sachem, to take his life in Cora's place. In a final gesture of affection and redemption, Heyward arranges to be executed in Cora’s place. Once Cora and Hawkeye escape, Hawkeye shoots Heyward just as he is about to be burned at the stake. Later, along steep mountain trails, Chingachgook, Uncas, and Hawkeye follow and attack Magua’s war party to free Alice. Uncas is killed by Magua and thrown down the mountain. Alice then chooses to calmly step off the cliff to her death rather than go to the beckoning Magua. In single combat with Chingachgook, Magua is quickly defeated and killed.
In the end, during a funeral ritual with Hawkeye and Cora, Chingachgook prays to the Great Spirit on behalf of Uncas, remarking that he is now the last of the Mohicans.…...

Last of the Mohicans

...The Last Of The Mohicans Jed Brotherson Dixie State College The Last Of The Mohicans The Last of the Mohicans is a fictional story set in colonial America. The novel uses real places, like fort William Henry, to add validity to the story that takes place in 1757 during the French and Indian War. This is when France and Great Britain battled for control of the North American colonies. The book is classified in the historical section with some romance in the mix even though it is clearly all fictitious. Reading the novel is an entirely different experience than watching Hollywood’s version in the motion picture. I was able to get a clear picture of what James F. Cooper was really trying to tell his audience when he wrote this book. Cooper portrays the prejudice ideals of the times and tries to show the reader how silly they are. As well as addressing racial prejudice, he skirts the bounds of interracial relationships and taboos for his time. He also demonstrates a distinct difference in groups of American Indians. While they all portray violent tendencies, he does make a distinction. Cooper used each character to embody a belief or a stereotype. Duncan Hayward, the white major of the English army, represented the conservatives of his time. He also was a classic embodiment of racial prejudice. For example, Colonel Munro had two daughters, Cora and Alice. In the first part of the book, we grow to love Cora as a character. She has been outspoken with her......

The Last Leaf

...O. HENRY, THE LAST LEAF In the 1890s, many artists lived in Greenwich Village, in New York City. Sue and Johnsy were artists. The two girls met each other in the month of May, at a restaurant in Greenwich Village. ‘I’m from the State of Maine,’ Sue said to Johnsy. ‘I draw pictures for stories in magazines.’ ‘I’m from California,’ Johnsy said to Sue. ‘But I want to go to Italy. I want to paint a picture of the Bay of Naples!’ The two girls talked happily for an hour – about art, about clothes, about food. Soon after their first meeting, Sue and Johnsy moved into a studio apartment together. Their rooms were at the top of an old brick house in Greenwich Village. In December, it was very cold in New York. Snow fell and there was ice in the ground. Many people in the city became ill. The illness was called pneumonia. The doctors tried to help the sick people, but many of them died. That month, Johnsy had pneumonia. She was very ill. She lay in her bed and she did not move. A doctor visited her every day. But Johnsy was not getting better. One morning, the doctor spoke quietly to Sue outside Johnsy’s room. ‘I can’t help her,’ the doctor said. ‘She is very sad. She doesn’t want to live. Someone must make her happy again. What is she interested in?’ ‘She’s an artist,’ Sue replied. ‘She wants to paint a picture of the Bay of Naples.’ ‘Painting!’ said the doctor. ‘That won’t help her!’ The doctor left the apartment. Sue went into her own room and she cried quietly for a few minutes.......

The Last Emperor

...The Last Emperor: Truth and Misleading In 1987, a film came into theaters across the globe about China’s last emperor. The Last Emperor, directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, shows the life of Pu-Yi from when he enters the Forbidden City at age three to become emperor of China, to his final days as a reformed man. The film, although it showed how China was during the Qing Dynasty in a fairly honest light, also had its downfalls. Many problems plagues the last years of the Qing Dynasty, such as the Republic Revolutions, opium, warlords, and the confusing relationship with Japan and it’s government during this time. These issues were either not touched on or barely noticeable during the almost three hour long film. The story of Pu Yi, China’s last emperor, starts with him being taken to the Forbidden City at the age of three. The Dowager Empress “arranged once more for a boy emperor.” (Morton, 174) Pu Yi would not stay emperor long, as he would lose that title in 1912 because of the Republican Revolution. Formed by Sun Yat-Sen, it was a revolution against imperial rule. This revolution was also largely a military revolt and the beginnings of a fast changing government. In the film this Revolution seemed to hardly happen. Although the young emperor was being protected from the outside world, it would have made the film more historically clear if this event was explained more in depth. As an important event during that was part of Pu Yi’s loss of power, the Republic Revolution......

Last Samurai

...The Last Samurai – Traditional and Modern Economies A traditional economy is an economic system that relies on a strong social network and is based on primitive methods and tools, whereas a modern economy relies on production, exchange, distribution, and consumption of goods. In the film, The Last Samurai, western Japan fights against the rebelling Samurai who do not wish to modernize and rid of their traditions. The vast differences between a traditional and modern economy are shown throughout the film as both civilizations express different means of production, military capabilities and cultural values. The reign of Emperor Meiji was one of the most revolutionary eras in Japanese history as Japan underwent dramatic changes in its government, economy, and culture. The nation opened its doors to the west and embraced a new world of cultural influences. Japan was transformed into an agrarian society with an industrialized economy and a strict military regime. Revolutionized Japan created modern weaponry such as guns and automatic weapons that were made in industrial factories. Instead of carrying goods using horses, Japan modernized using wagons and trains which made transportation of goods more rapid and efficient. In the film, we can see the paved streets and buildings of western Japan, the use of modern clothing, and advanced military technology. Conversely, the Samurai represent a traditional economy by their use of weapons, transportation, and......

Last of Michael

...WISDOM, WHILE OTHERS ARE TOO STRONG.”12 Through this repeated manner of speech we are shown how a ‘suitably mysterious’, cryptic persona has been projected onto the character of the spiritual Native over many years. This exchange brings to mind a character named The Sphinx, played by Wes Studi, in the film Mystery Men. Ironically evocative of a Native American stereotype, he sprouts ridiculously irrelevant ‘pearls of wisdom’, such as: ‘WHEN YOU CAN BALANCE A TACK HAMMER ON YOUR HEAD, YOU WILL HEAD OFF YOUR FOES WITH A BALANCED ATTACK.’13 It is no coincidence that Studi, of Cherokee descent, was chosen for this role after his humane yet traditional portrayals of Natives such as Magua in Michael Mann’s 1992 film production of The Last of the Mohicans. The Sphinx was a subtle extension of the mythical image of the Red Indian that has pervaded literature for hundreds of years. Cooper considers the transcendence of racial barriers at several points in the narrative by pondering whether the heaven of a Native and that of a white person ‘will be one and the same’.14 Heyward and Munro both wistfully express that they imagine the sentiment to be true. However, Hawk-eye, the character whose reality-based outlook we most identify with, conclusively declares that to tell the Natives that it would be possible for humanity to assemble around the throne of God ‘“without distinction of sex, rank, or colour!”’ would be to tell them ‘“that the snows come not in the winter, or that sun......

Last of the Mohicans Essay

...Joshua Sierra December 15, 2009 Professor Cordell Lit-201.001 The Last of The Mohicans is a novel that touches heavily on the topic of race and the difficulty people might face when attempting to overcome racial buriers. Such characters like Hawkeye and Chingachgook are proof of this. Hawkeye is a white man that prefers to live and follow the code of the Indians, rather than that of the white settlers. It is as if he is playing both sides of the field which works to his advantage and also lets the reader see how open minded Hawkeye seems to be. He is best friends with Chingachgook, the chief of the Mohicans. This alone shows that Hawkeye has a certain kind of appreciation for individuality and clearly shows that he is able to make sensible decisions without regard to race. He can see Chingachgook for who he really is and does not let silly things like race or cultural background come between their friendship. One interesting quote was in Chapter III when Hawkeye says, “There is reason in an Indian, though nature has made him with a red skin! I am no scholar, and I care not who knows it; but judging from what I have seen, at deer chases and squirrel hunts, of the sparks below, I should think a rifle in the hands of their grandfathers was not so dangerous as a hickory bow and a good flint-head might be, if drawn with Indian judgment, and sent by an Indian eye.” (Baym 1003) This quote comes from a debate that Chingachgook was having with Hawkeye. I......

He Who Lasts Last Lasts Best?

...HE WHO LASTS LAST LASTS BEST? As discussed in the exercise, the improvemnets in technologies and business processes at one side expands the market but on the other hand also brings decay for several players in the market. With the decay deciding the exit / collude / compete strategy for any particular industry player becomes a crucial factor. In this exercise we have two players – David & Goliath in the slingshot industry, which is one of the decaying industry. Based on theprevious quarter results of each other, both the players decide either to stay or to exit in the coming quarter without knowing each other’s choice. Since we know that slingshot industry will extinct by 1991, we need to come up with the exit strategy for the existing two firms. To analyze a possible exit point we have used the „Elimination of Dominated Strategy“ with following steps: 1. Drawing the sequential decision tree for David & Goliath from 1988 to 1991 2. Working from backwards to eliminate non-credible options at each point 3. Finding a possible set of best strategy at each level 4. Taking the chosen set of strategy above to the previous level 5. Repeating steps 2 to 4 till we locate a possible exit point for one of the players | David | Qty | Revenue | Goliath | Qty | Revenue | David & | Qty | Revenue-D | Revenue - G | | Alone | |   | Alone | |   | Goliath | | | | | | |   | | |   | | | | | Jan. 1988 | 3 | 1 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 4 |......

The Last of Mohicans

...THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS The observations I could do when I watched the movie The Last of the Mohicans, the 1992 historical epic film set are that: as regards the historical and physical characterization of the story were well-founded, the director had the job of trying to report in a visual descriptive what happened in the Time of 1757, during the French and Indian War. All the characters have their role and development of their part in the story that is well supported, clothes, geographical location, vocabulary, it seems that was not spared anything in relation to research historical construction of the film. Of course we cannot forget that much of the film depicts the fictional part of the story between the hero and heroine, they end up together in the end despite all the tragedies that happened, but either way the historical basis on which this novel was created could be closer to the reality of American colonial epoch 1757. The film shows what happened in the French and Indian War from the viewpoint of the colonists who were eventually recruited as militia under the imposition of the British Empire who fought against French forces , who ended up getting support from certain Indian tribes , is not that settlers willingly accept that they needed to defend the British Colony against the Frenchmen invaders, but rather , a matter of imposition of British government that required the mobilization of these militia to reinforce the power of their troops that existed on......

The Last of the Mohicans

...American Literature Prof: Renee Emerson James Fennimore Cooper was born in America on September 15th of 1789, and passed away September the 14th of 1851. Before starting his career as a writer he served in the US Navy. That caused him to base some of his stories on the sea and his Navy experience. He spent most of his time in Cooperstown, which was a town that his father founded. Also he was a member and contributor to the Episcopal Church. About his education, he attended to Yale for three years but then he good expelled due to misbehavior. He was without a doubt a prolific writer of the early 19th century. And he is one of the most important romantic writers in American history. His masterpiece is The Last of the Mohicans, which will be analyzed in this essay. The Last of the Mohicans is the most popular story from the Leatherstocking Tales. It is a story about the French and Indian war that took place in the 1750s. They were fighting about who would have control over the colonies. When Cora and Alice, the daughters of an English military man, are traveling to visit their father led by Magua they run into Hawkeye, Chingachgook and Uncas. Hawkeye came quickly into account and realized that they were being led to a trap so he tries to stop Magua but they failed. The day after Magua and his men attack the group and take Cora and Alice captive and Magua explicitly tell them that he hate the girls because the Colonel humiliated him. Magua’s desire was to marry Cora but she......

Five…” I stated. “I loved five women before you.” The disappointment in her eyes after a sigh, though she smiled… “What are their names?” “…Who, What, When, Where, Why…” I said to her. “Can you tell me about them?” “Who I loved, was a girl from college. I wasn’t exactly close to her, but with some superficial facts and a few interactions over a semester, you know, like most guys fantasizing over girls they barely know, I filled in the blanks like a fairytale author. And who she became in my head was probably more than the reality. She was a third year, sorority girl, and yeah, I was an infatuated freshman, sure, but the several times you get to spend together outside of class… It really allowed me to see, she also had a good heart and a bright spirit. The only problem was, so did just about every other guy. And while she turned me down nicely, I swear… There were times when it seemed like the cliché sorority girl may have felt something for the typical awkward freshman.” “What I loved, was an old friend, but she was more than just a friend. We met early in college and kept in touch through the years. We saw each other grow, and change...
