Trends in the Workplace Environment

5/19/14

My paper will be discussing the association with working as a professional in an organization related to the professional field. I will also be discussing the advantages and disadvantages of working with people in an office versus working from home.
A professional organization and a professional field differ in many ways. A professional organization is usually a nonprofit group of individuals looking to further seek a particular profession. This group’s focus is usually directed towards developing a solution for a common outcome. The professional field is a concentrated area of work in which an individual directs focus upon. This is usually the profession that a person is directly involved with. Both of these areas are relatable in that they both require the proper educational credentials in order to achieve each primary outcome.
Working in an office compared to working at home can have its pros and cons. When working in an office environment an individual can work with other people to complete a project and gather ideas. This can be beneficial for people that have creative jobs and need to brainstorm ideas. Being in an office environment can keep an individual from procrastinating by providing a certain amount of pressure in order to get objectives completed. This can also be a form of distraction always having people demanding completed assignments. Working from home can be beneficial because of the lack of distraction from other coworkers. Not having anyone around in a home office environment can produce poor results when not having the set deadlines that an office can provide. This can also be a downside in that you don’t have people to converse with about ideas. In conclusion working from home and an office can have pros and cons. Trying to find a balance in each environment is the key to being successful. Being able to use the tools around you is what makes a productive individual.…...

Current Workplace Trends

...Current Workplace Trends Prepared by Mike ohmar, Student Office Management Submitted to Dr. Professor January 27, 2013 Advancements in technology are changing the way companies preform tasks. Each day new ways of completing tasks are created and we are seeing major shifts in how business is generated. Workers are continuously changing their daily lives due to the trends that rapidly occur in today’s workforce. Workers are able to preform tasks from practically anywhere in the world or on the road through the vast amount of electronic devices making it possible to communicate through the Internet and cellular signals. Managers are forced to adopt new techniques making it possible to utilize these long distance communication advancements. With the vast amount of “spam” emails flooding workers inboxes, they must be careful on how to compose emails. Workers must be clear and careful when creating an email. Employees at all levels must be extra careful and professional with composing emails, and also whom the email is shared with. There has recently been a large amount of websites created for those hunting for jobs. This means that companies have the ability to search through thousands of resumes quickly and efficiently. This means that companies are adopting the “best person for the job” approach when hiring. Regardless of employee location, they are still a viable option when a company is looking for job candidates. Traditional training and meeting......

Trends in the Workplace

...1). The first function that would be likely to be affected by the implementation of an MRP system is recruitment. The system can be used to track people who have visited for the recruitment process, candidates from consultancies and their resumes, a list of candidates who are available for part time and full time work etc. This system can be integrated with training management to link with the initial process of the selected candidates. The next function to be affected is payroll. This would keep track of employee’s attendance and their time of entry to work and exit are entered into the system to determine the number of hours worked. It could track checks and reports both the hours of work and respective wages of each employee. It also includes the process of calculating the taxes and deducts from the salary and also garnishees wages for charitable purpose like child support and additional taxes withheld. This system may be time consuming but it is free of errors. The last function affected is work performance. The MRP system will basically maintain the history of employee’s performance and determines the number of employees eligible for reaching a certain level of hierarchy. It will also entail the performance goals of what is expected for each employee and how much is expected of them. It will also highlight those employees who are well qualified at work that may also advance within the company. One way as a human resource manager can successfully carry......

Development over Environment: a Pledge to Converse This Trend

...Development over Environment: A Pledge to Converse this Trend Introduction The second a child comes on this earth, since that moment he starts developing. For a better and positive development of that child, we proudly implicate for a better and hygienic environment. But in the present scenario, things are a bit different from that of past as yesterday was greener than today. Both development and environment are necessary elements for the survival of a society or a habitat but with the growing or developing economy, at some point of time one has to compromise with the environmental development. Developing nations like India, China, Brazil etc, which are developing economies are ranked in the list of top 10 Green House Gases (GHGs) emitters. It is, by this example, clear that the developing countries in the scale of economy are bigger polluters than the under-developed countries. The trend of development at the expense of environment is being strictly checked by the judiciary, municipal laws and international treaties and customs. Recently, the honourable Supreme Court of India has quoted that development is a trait of progressive society but shall not be made at the cost of environment. It does not take an environmental expert to realize that the world is changing. The global average surface temperature is rising and the rate of temperature increase has nearly doubled in the last 50 years. Many species are experiencing changes in their patterns of growth and migration due......

Hostile Environment in the Workplace and the Miami Dolphins

...Hanna Lyon Margaret Morrison 11/12/2013 Legal Environment of Business Tues/Thurs 12:30-1:45 pm Hostile Environment in the Workplace and the Miami Dolphins A hostile work environment includes any situation targeting race, color, religion, sex, national origin and even such aspects such as pregnancy, age or disability that affects a person’s ability to perform in the workplace. In this short analysis, I will go on to discuss racial discrimination, an ongoing issue in some workplaces, despite all the progress and efforts our country has made over the years. The NFL, a very culturally diverse organization, much like any professional sport in America, is starting an investigation into one of the Miami Dolphins’ players, Richie Incognito for his racist attacks on his teammate Johnathon Martin. The Miami Dolphins suspended Incognito around midnight on November 3rd. Incognito did many things to create a hostile work environment for Martin. He sent him text messages threatening to kill him, he forced Martin to pay $15,000 for a trip to Vegas, along with the thousands of verbal assaults. Martin was afraid to speak up, being only a second year player, in fear of being called soft. However it seems that this is no longer an innocent hazing affair as it is extortion and intimidation. Finally, Martin took the high road, and walked away from the Miami Dolphins. Making him look like more of a man, than Incognito will ever look. Now unfortunately, this isn’t the only instance,......

How Physical Environment Affects the Workplace

...Running head: PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT Physical Environment Physical Environment: Research supports the hypothesis a “room’s environment influences the interaction within it” (Tubbs, 2009, p. 169). Whether or not research supports this hypothesis, I have always believed in it. I do not necessarily believe certain hues have the same affect on all people, but they do have an effect. I can tell the difference in myself in motivation, productivity, and overall comfort in different types of rooms. Personally, for me, the color blue does not work; I am not as focused, I create tension not only within myself but with anybody who happens to have to work with me. Brown, I hardly think so; red/orange, I get rather anxious; pale green is best for my work product and concentration. This is why I allow everybody to have their office the way they want it, I certainly cannot tell them what is best for their work environment. The text discusses “flexible space” and “hoteling”; neither of which appeals to me, at all (Tubbs, 2009). Not that I mean to harp on this issue, but OCD creates some challenges in the way you perceive your environment. I want the same chair every day; the same phone, and I certainly do not want anybody else using it; I definitely do not want anybody to touch my pens, light switches or closet doors, etc. These concepts may very well work for some offices, but this is mine, and we will have traditional office space;......

Five Trends That Are Dramatically Changing Work and the Workplace

...Knoll Workplace Research Five Trends that Are Dramatically Changing Work and the Workplace By Joe Aki Ouye, Ph.D. Co-Founder and Partner New Ways of Working, LLC The Changing Nature of Work My wife, a manager at Hewlett-Packard, usually has a two minute commute—a thirty foot walk from the kitchen up to her office. She goes “to the central office” about once every other week, more to keep in touch socially rather than to formally collaborate. Although she only meets face-to-face with her globally-based team members about once per year, she has an audio conference with them weekly. As HP’s work force grows and becomes more global, she is a highly sought after manager. She has learned how to work with her distributed team, setting clear directions, communicating often and clearly, and, most importantly, creating activities to engender team trust and cohesion. Most workers today do not work like my wife; most still commute to and from traditional, centralized offices and work with teams in close proximity. Nevertheless, more and more of us are—or will be—working in both non-traditional ways and places, ranging from relying on adaptable furniture and hoteling desks at the central office, to satellite offices, offshore offices, and telework from home. According to a recent benchmarking study by our research consortium, The New Ways of Working, many organizations are formalizing “Alternative Workplace” programs that combine nontraditional work......

Every Workplace Deserves a Good Indoor Environment

...Preface SJWEH Suppl 2008;(4):3–4 Every workplace deserves a good indoor environment Problems with the quality of the indoor environment have become a new and demanding challenge to occupational health and safety. Modern workplaces resembling office environments that do not have any hazardous exposures originating from work processes can face other problems related to the indoor environment, for example, problems related to substances that are a part of building materials and occur in ventilation. People in Western societies spend more than 90% of their time indoors. Therefore, the quality of indoor environments plays a significant role in their life. Bad indoor air and environments are able to cause work-related symptoms and diseases, while high quality supports well-being and productivity. A good indoor environment not only consists of clean air (including proper humidity, air velocity, and temperature), but also of good acoustics, good lighting, and a good psychosocial environment in the workplace. In Finland, with over 5.5 million inhabitants and 2.5 million employees, the cost of poor indoor environments to society is nearly EUR 1.5 billion a year, mainly as a result of the cost of medical examinations and care, sickness absences, lower efficiency at work, allergies, hospital infections, and cancer. Good indoor environments also seem to affect our creativity, memory, and mood. According to a recent survey of office environments, one out of every three workers......
