...The UPS Essay Toby Jordan University of Phoenix CIS/207 Sadiqq Abdullah NOVEMBER 18, 2013 UPS was established in Seattle Washington around 1907 under the name American Messenger Co.; the company came about because of the need for a private messenger and delivery services. Around this time phones and vehicles were not in everyday use as they are today, messenger couriers were used in society by walking or using crowded public transit. Urban residents did not own automobiles making it difficult to get their big purchases through public transportation. The success of the enterprise came from the implementation of a consolidation system based off the consolidation of freight. . This system combines packages with the same address to the surrounding neighborhood making it convenient to make deliveries by one vehicle to help optimize transport costs. By the 1930s, the United Air Express started to make deliveries to the west coast by way of air delivery. The consolidation system was expanded to New York City around and this infrastructure was a key in keeping efficient deliveries. In 1950 UPS became a common carrier; this gave them the right to deliver packages to all urban addresses. UPS was granted the right to be the carrier for the 48 states in 1975; this help enabled them to offer second day delivery throughout the U.S. By 1987, they expanded to nearly all of North America, Canada, Germany, and Japan by becoming the air hubs for major distribution centers. ......

...market. In addition, it also provides hygienic processing and packaging, manufacture lines as well as functions a modern packaging facility. 2) Four people who have contributed to theories of operations management are Frederick W. Taylor, Frank and Lillian Gilbreth and Charles Babbage. • Frederick Winslow Taylor: was called the father of “scientific management” as he applied his engineering and scientific knowledge to management and established a theory named “scientific management theory”. He introduced scientific management which was the numerical measurement and analysis of the way work should be done. He started the process of systematizing all the elements that are part of the manufacturing system. For example, the same industrial engineering techniques developed by Taylor are still used in banks, insurance corporations and investment houses as well as truckers, airlines, and manufacturers. They are well suited for repetitive operations such as those that are characterize fast-food chains and information processing. • Frank and Lillian Gilbreth: they developed and refined “motion study”. An example of the motion study is observing the amount of distinctive motions essential to shovel coal into a kiln. After that, the task is shared into its distinct components, for instance taking up the shovel to dig the charcoal, walking to the kiln, and manipulating the shovel to deposit the charcoal. Moreover the company debt increased with 13.3 % (25% to 38.3%) still the rates are acceptable but if they will keep on depending on debt for the coming year, they will reach to a risky level ( 51.6% in 1998) and the company will be a risky choice for investors. As a result of injecting more money to the business through debt the gross profit increased, still to cover an overdraft of 5,000 and a mortgage of 20,000 in 97 the net profit was less. Shareholders won’t be happy to see ROE dropping to 18.9 % in 97 from the phenomenal 31.6 % in 96, however ROEs between 15% and 20% are considered desirable in the global markets. Return on Investment was a huge disappointment from 212.5 % in 96 to 66.7 % in 97 there must be a valid reason on why the ROI dropped this way, if it’s not something extraordinary like a natural disaster or some kind of a political issue, the board of directors will have a lot of questions from the investors to be answered, their investment policy should be revised. Even though they had more assets to invest in 97 the Return on Assets showed a drop of almost 12 % (23.75% in 96 to 11.7 % in 97) which means that the assets were not utilized in the best way to generate wealth it seems that management have not made the right decisions when it comes to......
