What would I have liked to know before the first time I did drugs or alcohol? Well the first time i really drank to get drunk i was in 8th grade. I had no idea what the difference was between vodka or tequila, and i also didn’t know that some alcohol doesn’t mix well with others. So I got into a drinking competition with a female that I had been friends with for a while. She bet that she could drink more than me so we kept going back and forth taking shots of different alcohol. I don’t recall too much from that night because I blacked out and ended up puking after I had passed out on a couch. But I do remember the last thing I drank was a shot of tequila and I couldn’t stand the taste. Just from that I wanted to throw up and while throwing up that was all I could take. Ever since I can’t stand to be around the smell. That night I had no idea that you can die from drinking too much or that alcohol poising is a real thing. I had no idea what BAC was or that there are many diff factors to drinking. I wish I would have known that it can be unsafe to drink until you can’t drink anymore. I also wish I would have known that if you puke than you are the one to clean it up, I had no idea what a hangover was. Cleaning up puke with a hangover is not a fun time. Other than that I don’t think there is too much more I would have cared to know before I drank that night. The first time I smoked weed I had a completely wrong idea about it. I thought it was just as bad as much harder drugs, I also thought it only took one time to get hooked and that it could ruin your life after one hit. But that was just what health class at my old school fed to us kids. In reality pot isn’t that bad, it is just illegal. I wish I would have known that it only causes short term negative effects, or that there are medical uses for THC. I wish I would have known that it can be a gateway drug but it doesn’t have to be. I also thought that if you smoked pot that you were destined to go to prison which isn’t true. I thought that marijuana damaged the lungs worse than tobacco products and I thought that it made you had a drunk like feeling. I was also brought up very against any kind of drugs and was always told that marijuana these days is nothing like it was back in the hippie days. I was under the influence that all marijuana that is grown and sold these day were laced with hard drugs and that after you did it one time you were hooked on a bunch of drugs. One thing I do wish I knew before my first experiences with drugs and alcohol is how big of a problem drinking and driving is. People look at drinking and or smoking as a social type activity and never think about what happens after the party is over and how they are getting home. All people want to do after drinking and or smoking and everyone is tired and going home, is going home yourself. Nobody thinks they are too intoxicated to drive until it’s too late and I think most people are to self-conscious to tell somebody “hey, I can’t drive home right now like this” because that think people will judge them or make fun of them. I also think that people don’t understand how responsible it is to stand up and volunteer to be a designated driver. It really says a lot about somebody’s personality when they can still hang out with friends that are drinking and resist the urge and still have a good time. It shows the maturity level of one’s self and it also makes it obvious that you are the leader and like to be in control. After my brothers were hit by a drunk driver I will not stand for any kind of drinking and driving. It also makes me think a lot more before I make the decision to drink. So in a summary, I wish I knew that one night of fun with drugs and alcohol can effect and even ruin yours or somebody else’s life. So if you’re going to partake in such activities then make sure you’re not going anywhere and everybody knows their limit.…...

What I Have Learned

...LIFE, AS WE KNOW IT From different ups and downs I had experienced and from different people I have met in my college days, I can say that I had learned so much, much more than high school and elementary days. If those younger years let me become learned of basic education, this stage of life, being a college student taught me more than medical and nursing concepts. But it also taught me about other aspects of life such as the whole life itself, understanding other people’s life and feelings, knowing how me, myself and I help me in every problems, treasuring friendships and respecting other people. Health care spirituality is one of the courses that let me learn how these things affect my living. It teaches me more about life and the consequences of it. Life is a continuing process of learning. I believe that the every good deed, and everything we do to others, will not be written on transcript of records, but recorded on Almighty’s. At first, going to college made me feel ambivalent feelings. Feelings of excitement, fear, feeling of being misunderstood, not being heard, and of being alone. Coming from a Catholic school high school institution, I decided to choose a Catholic college institution. One selfish reason is that, I prefer to go to school which has a lower dense of population, I don’t prefer to be in a crowded universities and college, because I think that the lower the population is, the more focused the teachers and administration can give to the students.......

What I Have Become

...| What I Have Become | Sandtron Leon Harrell | | | | Approaching the end of my Fall Semester of 2011 I had accomplished one of the greatest things in my life. I had become a member Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated. All was well and I felt as though there was not too much else for me to conquer. Then as the semester drew to a close being advised and selecting classes for the Spring Semester began to be advertised all over myUWG. So to rid myself of all the irksome alerts of West Georgia I went and got advised. While selecting my classes my advisor brought up Personal Relationships. When I first heard it the first two things I thought were “my girlfriend took that class” and “she said it was easy.” So with me being the collegiate student I am I decided I would take it. I figured why not I’m in a personal relationship I should be able to relate. The first day of class was definitely not what I expected. I did not know that my teacher would look, think and talk like a student! From then on I knew that this was class was going to have the biggest impact on me, the way I thought, the way I talked, the way I evaluated relationships and how I looked at my life’s up and downs all together we’re going to change in due time. From the time I got advised up to the first day of class I honestly thought that this was just going to be another class. When in reality it wasn’t just another class, it was going to be THE class. From January 10, 2012 and so on, my life......

What I Have Learned

...What Have I Learned By Charles Myers When I started this course I was not aware there were so many types of written communication being used in the work place. The field of technical communication is a lot more involved and diverse than what I was aware of. In my past line of work I was not exposed to much in the way of technical writing, I mainly used part drawings and something we called route sheets. These were documents that followed a part through the manufacturing process from start to finish. At the time I was using them I did not think about what went into designing them so they would be easy to read and interpret by all people who came in contact with them. Now I have a greater respect for people that have to design such documents on a daily basis. After taking this course I feel I would be more able to do something like this myself if the need ever comes. The course has also helped me see the need for having a well written resume in order find a better job once I complete my course of study. I have never needed a resume before in the field of work that I was in, but I can see that will probably change when I change careers. The field that I plan to go into will give me a greater chance to use the skills I have learned in this course more so than anything I have done before. I still do not consider myself to be a writer, but I am better prepared with the basics and have the course text that I can use to refer back on when the need arises. I now see that I......

Alcohol and Drug Addiction

... Alcohol and Drug Addiction COM/156 There was a missing person report across the news today, my co-worker stated. I never paid any attention to it; I went on about my day as if everything was fine. When I arrived at home I had several messages on my answer machine regarding my best friend Sonya. The message said, Samara please call me it’s Sonya’s mother, I haven’t heard from her in a couple of days, I just wanted to know if you have talked or seen her. I quickly called back to inform her mother that I have not heard from Sonya in months, and the last time we spoke she was doing well and taken a trip to Florida with her new boyfriend. Her mother began to tell me that Sonya was addicted to drugs as well as alcohol. She began to experience with alcohol a little after high school, which lead to the use of drugs. Sonya’s mother also explained to me that this boyfriend of hers was not good to her; he fed her the alcohol and drugs. He also abused her physically, verbally, and mentally. My heart was filled with so much pain and emptiness. This was my best friend my sister and [Grammar: A run-on sentence requires a comma before "and" (or other conjunction) linking main clauses] she was gone. Drug and Alcohol addiction is one of......

Arguments of Drugs and Alcohol Abuse

...Arguments of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Arguments of Alcohol and Drug Abuse “If drinking is causing problems with your life, you have a drinking problem” says Smith, Melinda, MA, with helpguide.org. With the holidays upon us, this is a common argument between individuals with family members, law enforcement officers, hospitals and mores. Many feel that since drinking has been around since the dawning of time it can be controlled by choice. If you ask that question to someone that has lost their job, family, home or way of life due to them being unable to control their drinking, they would argue differently. Alcohol and Drug addiction is not just a choice but a disease that affects everyone around them including family and loved ones. Addiction is a family disease not just an individual says Hara Marano, “The first step”. Although one can never be cured of addiction, there is help to learn how to live life without the use of drinking or using drugs. It’s up to the individual to want to get that help. Addiction by definition is the use of any chemical substance to alter states of body or mind for other than medically warranted purposes. It doesn't matter whether its beer, hard liquor, or a glass of wine, addiction doesn't choose its vessel, it all becomes harmful. In the medical field, it’s becoming increasingly common to hear someone argue that they aren't addicted to the medicine because it’s prescribed, but if it’s not taken as it is supposed to be or if you begin......

What I Have Learned

...Things I have learned in my 18 Years Life tosses a lot of lessons, some are difficult to learn and some are easier, it’s all about how you handle it. Something’s that life wants you to know, are little and stupid and seem life they don’t have any significance to your life. However, it is either going to educate you not to do it again, or it will be a amusing story to tell your friends down the road. The little things make life a little lighter sometimes where as the large things helps you open your eyes and helps you in the long run. Life has taught me numerous things. Everyday I learn something new, adding to that list. One of the very first things that I recall learning, is to not lie on the ground attempting to look underneath the vacuum when mom is in the middle of vacuuming. For some individuals, this lesson is one that does not need to be learned, but for me, it was something I had to learn. Spending hours of crying, as my mother pulled every strand of hair out, and hours of my mom being annoyed yet laughing about it anyways because how bizarre is it, that I got my hair stuck in the vacuum. While facing the pain, I thought I learned that I should steer clear of housework; my mom on the other hand, did not. Something else I have learned is that telling someone that they look ill or worn-out, isn’t going to make him or her feel better. I, of all people should know, this because if someone were to walk up to me and say something like that, my heart would......

“Am I a Product of My Past or Do I Have a Choice in What I Do? Why Do I Do What I Do?”

...I believe that our environment can inhibit our options, but the choices we make can enhance our experience within the environment we have been placed in. In my stance on the question at hand I would like to present my take on Skinner’s ideas that, “It is the environment which is responsible for objectionable behavior, and it is the environment, not some attribute of the individual, which must be changed.” and, “A person does not act upon the world, the world acts upon him.” I understand Skinner’s view point, however, I differ from his ideas in three ways: first, we are products of the choices we have made in the past; secondly, our physical environment can be changed by us; and third, our mental environment is influenced by authorities, but not controlled. In the following paragraphs I will use observational learning, instinctive drift, and behavior modification to explain each of my personal views pertaining to the question, “Why do I do what I do?” I have lived in Southwest Kansas my entire life because my parents chose to start their lives here; therefore I am a product of the choice my parents made for me seventeen years ago pertaining to where I live. However, like any environment there are ecological factors to consider such as weather, wildlife, and resources. For example, let’s say I had only previously encountered garter snakes and bullsnakes and had had positive experiences with both, and my parents had never told me to fear snakes. Then one day I encounter...

What Would I Do If I Would Have to Die in a Year?

...What Would I Do If I Would Have to Die in a Year? Mortality is something that binds us all. We may have different personalities, different colors, different accents, but we all are human. Sometimes death sneaks up on someone and takes him by surprise. Sometimes it lingers until the person he's visiting knows the friendship will go on a deeper level soon. First I would take a lovely first class cruise around the world for one entire year, or, maybe just use the ships as a constant base from which to explore other worlds, until the fateful day. I would try and travel to every place on Earth, and have as many deep and spiritual conversations as possible, meet the great spiritual and influential philosophical thinkers in the world today, starting with His Holiness the Dali Lama. Then, when the time of passing to the next existence comes, have those that love me, who know me, all around me, for a peaceful, calming, soul releasing experience, and to let them know, it is not a moment of emotional disaster, but one of triumph and transition, for the human spirit. However, life is beautiful and amazing, and probably for us its too early to think about death, because we have so much unfinished work to do and make our families happier,Mortality is something that binds us all. We may have different personalities, different colors, different accents, but we all are human. Sometimes death sneaks up on someone and takes him by surprise. ...people develop and rely upon in the process of social interaction. Without social interaction, you are not a social being, and this theory observes what people do on a daily basis and why they do them. Seeing that this theory is a micro-level perspective, people may miss the larger concerns of society. In my family, I don’t have any relatives around my age due to my mother being the youngest of seven. Her siblings had children more than a decade before I was born so the majority of my cousins when I was around ten years old, have already initiated in starting their lives and careers. One cousin always stood out in particular to me. He never came to family parties or events, never wished anyone a Happy Birthday, or tried reaching out to us at all. Being that adults always surrounded me when I was growing up, my mother knew I was mature enough to tell me that my cousin was an alcoholic and a drug addict. Taking in that information at such a young age was very overwhelming considering it was my first time hearing of this in my family. It first started with the alcohol. As the years went on, he started getting so careless and irresponsible that he lost his very well paid job in Manhattan. He became so depressed that his addict state of mind started growing stronger and more powerful until he found a new addiction. Drugs. Instead of him being rowdy or uncontrollable, he started self-medicating himself to become more tranquil and forget about his troubles. While......

What I Used to Think About Art and Artists

...Part One – What I Used to Think About Art and Artists When I started taking this class this semester I wasn’t really sure exactly what to expect or which artists we were going to study. When I started this course I used to think that artists, as in painters, were all somewhat strange quiet people with few social skills. From my previous experience most of the people that I knew or knew about were a bit on the strange side. I knew a lot of unknown artists when I was younger and I still know some unknown artists now, it’s just that most of the ones that I know fit that particular stereotype. Rather messy in appearance and kind of closed off from most of society. I used to think that most artists behaved in a somewhat wild manner with wacky thoughts. Being an artist myself, pretty much everyone I knew in my high school art classes were all pretty strange, we were always causing a ruckus. I used to think when artists did art it just kind of happened. I guess I felt like it just came naturally to artists and the magic kind of just happened all on its own, like that it didn’t take a lot of effort to do it. I think that when I was in high school and taking a lot of art classes I just don’t remember thinking to much about what I had to do, I’m sure I probably did, I just don’t remember consciously think about it. I never really thought about what sources there would be for artists other than love, drugs, and alcohol. I guess that it what used to first pop into my......

Macroeconomics What I Have Gained

...Macroeconmics was more difficult than I expected. I feel that this should have been a class that I should have taken in a classroom setting, but due to my schedule and location, it would not have been possible to do so. To be successful in this course, I was to pay attention to details and work my assignments in sequential order, work consistently and not procrastinate and read all of the course documents. I followed through on some of these things but lacked on some as well. I would have to say that in grading myself, I would give myself a C, which is what I have earned so far in this course. The most surprising thing I learned in economics is that I didn’t really know much at all about the subject, and still do not feel like I have mastered it. I was completely unaware of the Keynesian Economics. I learned more about the history of economic falls in our country. I learned that I was not fully aware of how the economy works especially when it comes to our government and industries. I have gone over so many different things that I am completely overwhelmed and currently cannot specify one specific thing that was eye-opening or life changing. Macroeconomics did change my way of thinking when it comes to the economy and how things are constantly changing and how our unemployment rate effects us nation wide. What I have learned in this class has changed how I feel about money management and not saving. I have always known that I need to save and that my finances......

My First Experience

...Louisiana, USA I was born and raised in western part of Africa, Nigeria to be exact. I have lived in Africa all my life and I loved the African culture. I have not been a globe trotter but every part of Nigeria and Africa is pretty much the same. My first major travel experience is to come to New Orleans, Louisiana United States of America to study after spending eight (8) year in a Nigerian University (University of Maiduguri) without graduating. Everything is entirely different in this part of the world. Unlike some parts of Nigeria that currently does not want westernization including western education. I clearly see what makes America great and New Orleans the crescent city facing the Mississippi river and the birth place of jazz with rich culture. I boarded a Delta Airline to the United States to start the spring semester in Southern University New Orleans in January 2014. I looked forward to seeing the beauty of America as I’ve always see in movies. As I got off the plane at Louis Armstrong International airport (MSY), got hold of my luggage, I started to notice the difference and it dawned on me that I am over 100,000 miles away from home. Evidently, it was different out here than what I use to know. Everyone knew their way around. I barely could communicate because no one had the patience to understand my thick English accent. I tried to speak to a white lady by a corner and she walked away from me after saying “I can’t understand you”. I felt humiliated and wished......
