Type of Book/Genre : Inspirational Book

Descirption/Brief Summary: One topic discussed in the book is about Leadership and noted that a Good Leader Should be a Good Shepherd. Reading on this book, I marvelled at the important role of the shepherd plays, guiding helpless, defenceless sheep that generally cannot fend for themselves. It’s interesting that in many ways, to maximize the productivity of a company and its people, a good leader should also be a dependable, responsible shepherd. Leaders who serve as shepherds are known for having (1) Unwavering Commitment (2) Unquestioned Familiarity and (3) Unshakeable Priorities. For some, leadership means completely controlling what subordinates do. These leaders like to micro-manage, insisting on knowing and managing every detail. Others prefer a more hands-off, delegating approach. While there is not one particular style that is ideal for all leaders, there is something to be said about the leader who empowers those that work for him. There are two other related observations from the Bible about leadership: (1) Leaders Maintain Awareness of their Follower’s Needs. For employees to perform maximum effectiveness, leaders should see to it that their basic needs are met such as: adequate compensation, suitable working environment, sufficient assistance for complex projects, clear communication from leadership, and sensitivity to personal issues they may be confronting. (2) Leaders Provide Stability in Turbulent Times. When leadership is weak, confusion results and can lead to chaos, when there is a leadership vacuum, anyone can step in. A strong leader clarifies the company’s direction and goals, so those who follow can support and contribute to the corporate mission. Barna Research…...

The ethical problem in this situation is Whether or not I should be honest and do the right thing by turning in SFC Sharp for possibly destroying some “Secret” documents. 2. Employ applicable laws and regulations. a. Each Unit is responsible for coming up with their own SOP’s from Tactical movements to situations such as this one (Security breach), which should state proper disposal of documents that are considered Secret. Reflect on the ethical values and their ramifications. a. When I signed on that dotted line I also swore to live by the Army Values. Some Values that I think go with this situation are Loyalty, Duty, and Integrity. I need to be loyal to my country, unit and myself to do the right thing and report this situation. Not doing so is not showing my loyalty to my country and unit. It is also my duty to fulfill my obligations fully and report anything that could hurt my unit in any way, especially in a security breach situation. What Makes a Terrorist

...The social aspect of terrorism goes very deep for the terrorist especially those in the middle-eastern countries. The social view addresses the in-group/out-group bias as well as the fundamental attribution error. The in-group/out-group bias refers to the tendency for individuals to identify themselves as a particular group, placing all others in opposing groups. In the case of terrorism, a trained terrorist may think they are good and righteous, but all others (including those that do not practice their cultural norms or religious expectations) are among the out-group. By defining themselves as an in -groups, it makes it easier for an individual to act out against those they consider a out-group member. The creations of in and out groups are fabricated at a young age. In the case of countries known for frequent acts of terrorism, their society teaches their inhabitants to hate out-groups, defining them as targets of destruction. Taylor & Horgan (2006) describe this phenomenon as “the incremental process through which youngsters become committed insiders of counter-culture youth groups” (p. 581). To be more basic in explanation, societal pressure and norms create terrorists. The old adage, “it takes a village to raise a child,” is true when it comes to making a terrorist. The social attitude of that community becomes a part of who ever lives in that area and therefore, sets the way they think. Another perspective is the view of Behaviorism. The Behavioral......

What Makes a Good Manager

...David Kosak Written Assignment Week 4 MGT160 WHAT MAKES A GOOD MANAGER? The age old question of what makes a good manager has been around for as long as companies have been in existence. Throughout the years, with a shift from a predominantly industrial workforce to a more office centered workforce, ideal qualities for a manager have also shifted from more authoritative based to more communication based. Many various qualities make up what we now consider to be a good manager or supervisor. One of the most important qualities of being a successful manager is the ability to communicate with your employees. Nothing is worse than not being able to explain to your employees what it is you are looking for exactly. Often times, especially in the case of lower level managers and supervisors, you may need to communicate an idea that has been sent down through numerous people already and it is important that the message that is being sent does not get lost in translation. Employees will appreciate it if they can fully understand what their objectives are. Well-conceived, measureable employee objectives are a manager’s best friend and communication is the key to establishing those. Another important quality of a good manager is the ability to delegate to your employees. Every day, a manager receives a variety of tasks that he or she cannot just do on their own. They must assign certain tasks to certain employees. It is important to spread out the tasks in a......

What Makes a Great Leader

...What makes a great leader? There are many schools of thought and mountains of research in attempting to answer that question. Answering that particular question is a monumental task and given the scope it would be impossible for me to answer that question here. What I will do is take a look at the given scenario and determine what kinds of leader each of the 3 executives are based on the attributes and characteristics of each. With the scenario given I have determined that Executive A should be classified as a “Level 5” leader, Executive B should be classified as a Transactional leader and Executive C should be classified as a Transformational leader. Based on the information given Executive A is a true level 5 leader. According to Jim Collins who developed the concept of level 5 leaders from a 1996 study, he “found that these leaders have humility, and they don't seek success for their own glory; rather, success is necessary so that the team and organization can thrive.” (Level 5 Leadership – Achieving “Greatness” as a Leader (n.d.). Retrieved December 30, 2012, fromhttp://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/level-5-leadership.htm). Executive A has the humility and drive associated with leaders of that classification. He attributes the company’s successes to those who work under him and takes personal accountability for any failures. I believe this takes pressure off of leaders under him and allowing them to be creative without fearing that they will be blamed for failure.......

What Makes a Good Student

...What makes a good student? Personally, I am a very visual learner, so I take my own notes and color them with pens and highlighters to draw more attention and make it easier to recall them. Talking out loud when studying is another strategy that I find to be very effective when studying. There is no simple answer when it comes to the question of what makes good student. It’s widely known that everyone learns differently, and some people are more tuned to one way of learning over another. All that being said, it’s a little bit ironic that even though we learn and absorb material differently, we are still tested by the same means. I’ve given this question a lot of thought and while I think more and more about it, I find my answer to have changed a lot from my initial response. Yes you can easily list ten things off the top of your mind that make a “good” student, like: attentiveness, attendance, respect, doing what is asked (homework), being interactive, coming prepared, and being on top of your time management etc--- but I find that it really depends on what your definition of a good student is in the first place. Obviously most people think that a “good” student is one that receives high grades; but on the contrary, I think what makes a good student is someone passionate and who carries the will to learn and educate them self. I personally hate school, but love education. I believe that our education system is very flawed. The way our system is set up now is......

What Makes a Hipster

...What makes a Hipster? You could be one yourself and never know. By Nathan Green -- September 26, 2015 Hipster. If you ask a hipster, the word itself has lost all meaning. But if you ask someone else, it means hipster, and everyone gets it. Picture by pompei77 on deviantart.com Hipsters are difficult to describe as a group, but we know one when we see one, right? I used my residence at Oklahoma State University to find plenty of subjects, and several were willing to talk to me about their style. They were people who gave off that unique vibe that we can all know: a lack of any recognizable brands, skinny jeans (which are more of a collective style now, but are a must for a hipster it seems), glasses like Ray Ban Wayfarers or "Buddy Holly" style glasses, "ironic" t shirts like any kind of vintage rock tour shirt or anything eye catchingly original, and many carry messenger bags and sport facial hair (for males) coupled with the distinctive knit hat. When studied, hipsterism has been described as a "contrarian culture" which is taking up a style or way of life in a way that is opposed to the majority, regardless of how unpopular it may be, which was apparent by the disdain I was shown when I used the word hipster. That was the one thing that turned them against me, the implication that they were a member of a group. This is the basis of the culture. One of the key elements of being hipster is to "avoid the label." Darian, a tall man sporting a well groomed beard......

1- What Makes a Leader

...carried away with a position of power, so the best leaders are those who use their power for the betterment of everyone, not abuse their power for their own personal betterment. Furthermore, effective communication is also one of the characteristic of a good and efficient leader. He should be able to put across what needs to be done and how. At the same time, he should be willing to accept relevant suggestions from his subordinates. He should have the ability to listen, question, analyze and observe effectively. He should believe that actions speak louder than words. A leader who constantly changes his or her tune will confuse the team members and this will lower their productivity. A leader must therefore be consistent in his actions, his words, and in his thoughts as well. Leaders who are biased never make good leaders, so he should be completely neutral and should display consistency that amazes everyone. Thus, an efficient and good leader must also know how to co -operate with his team. He should get to know his team members should not appear as an overly strict and rigid personality. Finally as a good and efficient leader, a leader must have passion. They should not make the necessary courageous and difficult decisions and carry them into action. So, the people around the world should give respect for all the leaders. Thus, we also should encourage the leaders by giving importance to them and also become their followers. 3) Qualities of a successful person I have seen......

What Makes Art Art

...Britani Graves Art Essay 1 6-20-11 What makes Art Art? I believe art can not be defined. According to the Fall 2007 Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Definition of Art, by Thomas Adajan, "the definition of art is controversial... whether art can be defined has also been a matter of controversy." I think artists can take anything and put their twist on it and what they think it is and they can call it Art. Art is all around us in many forms and fashions. Art has evolved in so many different ways and can make people feel so many different feelings. Everywhere we look today we can see some form of Art and if you really take time to enjoy it and get in touch with your feelings everyone could learn to appreciate things a lot more. Art can be a very therapeutic way to deal with emotions people may not be able to express any other way. In the sculpture The Kiss by Auguste Rodin it is a true example of expressing a feeling of love. In the sculpture they look so passionate and in love it just makes you feel good.  I think any work that touches us on an emotional level – brings us joy or anger, tears or laughter – is art. But there is a cultural aspect to it as well, particularly in how we interpret art. Georgia O’Keeffe says, “I found that I could say things with colors and shapes that I couldn’t say in any other way-things I had no words for.” I really think our book Prebles’ Artforms by Patrick Frank says it good when he says, “Not all of us regularly create works of...

What Makes Us Human

...Anthropology ISU Position Paper: What makes us human? Humans have existed on earth for an estimated 6 million years. Not only did humans start off with the same conditions, actions, behaviours as any other species on earth, they also evolved by imitating some animals throughout their existence. Yet, 6 million years later humans are more civilized, sensible, and mentally advanced than any other species on earth. This shows that humans are apart from anything else that god has put forth on earth. People may ask, what makes us human? What are things that we have done or can do, that have got us to this point? Many Anthropologists have been thinking of answers to this question and have come up with a number of conclusions, but the 3 most defining characteristics human possess are bipedalism, communication through different forms of language, and lastly human’s ability of realization of belonging. Firstly, bipedalism is a natural trait humans have acquired which allows them to walk on two rear limbs in a vertical posture, with frontal limbs free. Importantly, bipedalism is a trait that has immensely contributed in advancing humans’ abilities and has allowed them to accomplish both simple and complicated tasks, furthermore advancing their repertoire compared to other mammals. It is estimated that humans in general started to become bipedal around 3.6 million years ago. Humans’ first try to attempt standing on their own two legs is in their late infancy stages (7-12 months).......

What Make a Great Fiction

...“What Makes Great Fiction” There are many aspects in a story that play key roles in its quality and the overall view of by reader. Suspense, drama, love, conflict, and war, make movies great. However, what separates these movies and makes them stand out from one another? Yes, each movie has a different story with different characters, but there has to be something truly unique about it to make it memorable and a classic. The writing technique that I am going to focus on is narrative structure. Narrative structure isn’t as simple as it sounds. There are many styles and approaches authors and directors can take to keep the story from being too bland and uninteresting. In The Norton Anthology of Short Fiction it says that in order to write good fiction, the writer must take a more complex approach in portraying the story to the reader and the story must be original. A writer and director that has mastered these two things is the notorious director, Quentin Tarantino. A great example of how significant narrative structure is Quentin Tarantino’s use of nonlinear storylines. Nonlinear storylines can be seen in Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Kill Bill. These movies seem to start in the beginning and play through without any suspicion to reader of it starting somewhere other than the beginning of the plot. As the movie progresses there are specific details that are missing that leave the viewer confused. The movie is displayed in a series of chapters that seem...

What Make a Happy Marriage?

...What are the ingredients that make for a happy marriage? According to H. Norman Wright, communication is the key to a happier marriage. One must know how to converse collectively, how to listen in and know we are being heard, how to comprehend and convey our feelings and from this, how to get unstuck and start growing again. Communicate! Lack of communication is the number one reason even good relationships fail. And here is a useful format for doing so, especially when dealing with incendiary topics: Listen to your partner's position, without interrupting him. Just listen. When he is finished, summarize what you heard him say. If you can, empathize with your significant other even though you don't agree. This will take your partner off the defensive, and make it easier for him to hear your thoughts and feelings. It's hard to argue when you use this format. While on the other hand, Respect your partner, and don't take him or she for granted. Treating your partner with respect is likely to get you the same in return. And regularly reminding him how much he or she means to you will enrich your relationship in indescribable ways. Don’t be afraid to express your feelings of appreciation with your partner — they will be thankful that you did. What are the fundamental differences that separate happily and unhappily married couples? Happily couple communicates more to each other than unhappily married couples.
